X100V or 23mm F1.4 WR
1

Hey,

I feel really torn, and trying to prevent myself just doing both! I currently have a x100t which is my most used camera when out and about with family or my girlfriend. I also use a X-H1 and have a 35mm F1.4 as well as a 55mm f1.2. I mostly use the 56mm as it’s just dreamy. Winter is arriving in the UK so I love the low light capability of the f1.2, but my preference focal range is 35mm equivalent. I don’t really use the 35mm f1.4 as it’s just never been a focal range I’ve got on with too well

Unsure if I should upgrade my most used camera (x100t) as it appears the x100v has better iso performance for low light, or invest in the new upcoming 23mm lens. The 23mm lens is cheaper then the x100v and both offer WR which is something I want in my next lens (again, to help during the winter and poor weather)

I rarely find my x-H1 a pain to carry as I use peak design capture clips and slings, even with the 56mm on it. But there’s always been a magic to the x100 series that’s hard to resist.

Can anyone help a guy decide between his head and his heart!?

My vote would be the x100V. Keeps things compact, the lens is upgraded compared to the T, you get a nice flip screen.

If you got the new 23mm f1.4, what would happen to your x100T? Seems redundant and I have a feeling you'd stop using the x100.

If I would be in your shoes I would

- either evaluate very careful if and when your X100T really falls short considering low light capability and WR, means how many shots do you really "miss"?

- or, in case GAS is stronger and money is not really a concern, go for the 23mm f/1.4!

I would decide for the 23mm f/1.4 as you gain 1 stop over the X100 series lens. Now, your X-H1 may not have the low ISO capabilities of the actual cameras and the X100V, but

- this could be compensated by the faster lens and

- maybe you will update one day also this camera and then you already have another good lens.

If it’s ergonomics with lightweight freedom you want then X-100V, if you’re not bothered, then the 23mm f2! I say f2 not 1.4 due to weight as this lens closer matches the X100V. But on an X-T you are not in the same ball game. One is a compact, the other a CSC. I love the simplicity of the X100 range, no complications, just portable fun!
My X-T3 gives me greater flexibility for sure, but sometimes less is more. That’s how I’d describe the difference between the two,

Just upgrade to the X100V...it's great and you can take it anywhere with you. I have the old 23mm f1.4 just sitting around  since I got the X100V. I pair it with the 56mm f1.2 for a great combo.

If it’s about low light I’d go with the 23mm for the f1.4. There is nothing better for low light than keeping iso low. If it’s about being compact, the OVF, leaf shutter etc then that’s when the argument for the x100v comes into play.

I would go for both eventually (make sure you get the new XF23mm F1.4, the old one isn't without its flaws and there are many semi duds on the used market).

If the X100 series is your most used camera then go for the X100V I'd say. The new lens is so much sharper, totally worth the upgrade.

as you are a fellow UK resident, use the free loan service. I have an X100V coming for a couple of days in November to try, free of charge.

You could loan the 23 lens (old one only) and the X100V at the same time, for 2 days, for FREE!!

Just do both? Why not upgrade the X100T to the V and trade the 35, which you say you don't use, for the 23? Would a XH1 kit of a 23 and 56 cut it for you? If yes, you'll have the best of both worlds.

You imply that you would trade the X100T for the V or buy the 23.  What is the trade up cost and what is the cost of the 23 (the current version in the UK is £819, so the new version will be a similar or higher price). I suspect that the cost of a X100 trade will be higher. However, if you you throw the 35 into the mix then the total cost of change will be higher than that for either a X100 change or purchasing the 23, but the combined cost of change might be more acceptable. Just need to do the research and get quotes.

As an aside, I too had a head and heart decision regarding the x100V or a XE4/27; heart said X100V, head XE4 - head won.

Tough decision - apologies if I've made it more complicated! Good luck.

Hi. Have you considered the viltrox 23mm 1.4? I have it and really like it. Great value too. You could probably buy that and the x100v

Is it such a bad thing that the X100T would no longer be used? If the X-H1+23mm F1.4 combo is that great, I think that's a good thing. OP could even sell the X100T for a little extra cash.

If low light photography and sharpness are priorities for you, I would agree with a previous poster that the X-H1+23mm F1.4 would be better than the X100V. Throw IBIS into the mix for static subjects, and you're many stops brighter than the X100V.

It sounds to me that portability is another priority of yours, as the X100T is your most used camera. My opinion may not be the most popular here on the Fuji forum, but I'm going to suggest that you seriously look into the Ricoh GR IIIx, which is the most portable APS-C on the market today. Its focal length at 40mm is very close to that of the X100V. Not only that, the GR IIIx has IBIS, which the X100V does not have. This will help with low light, but you have to remember that the Ricoh is a F2.8 lens versus the F2 on the X100V. I don't own the Ricoh, but many people have reported being able to shoot slower than 1/10 of a second. The icing on the cake is that the Ricoh retails for $1,000 versus the $1,400 for the X100V. Of course, it would be foolish not to recognize that the Ricoh has many weaknesses when compared with the X100V, but I've pretty much made up my mind that the Ricoh GR IIIx is going to be my EDC camera. Worst-case scenario, you have more options, and options are usually a good thing!

Re: X100V or 23mm F1.4 WR

That’s the concern I have. If I end up buying both, would I just barely use one of them, and thus have wasted my money. A lens is always good to own, but I’ve had my x100t since release date so I get life out of them as well.

Re: X100V or 23mm F1.4 WR

i like this idea. I may have to hit the streets at night with my x100t as I haven’t for a long time and remind myself how it performs. I usually bring the 56 1.2 at night, but would like the wider. However if I can get comparable low light performance from the x100v then I’d rather that.

you make a good point regarding upgrading bodies later down the line though as well.

Re: X100V or 23mm F1.4 WR

I have considered a cheaper alternative to be just get the 23mm F2 tbh. I really want something with WR for the awful weather we get as I don’t have confidence shooting in it, but we also have many months of low poor light, which is how I ended up down the rabbit hole im in. It appears it may be prudent for me to set my camera to f2 on the xh1 and take some shots at night to see how it performs.

Yeah I’m only interested in the newer 23mm that releases in November at the moment. I can see myself ending up with both to be honest down the line.

Re: X100V or 23mm F1.4 WR

Thank you. I’d be willing to part with the 35mm, but my x100t has many many war wounds on it from years of travelling and getting bashed about in scenarios it wasn’t designed for. It’s truly been through some rough situations and harsh terrain with me and it shows on the body. I wouldn’t change that about it, and functionally it still works perfectly, but no way someone would buy it from me, and I also don’t think I could part ways with it. To much emotion attached to that thing. It’s likely I’d let my partner use it.

X100V. I ditched my 23/1.4 when I had my T. Can't imagine even considering it with my current V. Big, heavy, inconsistent AF. The renders, though different are not calling cards for me like a 28/2 or 35/1.4.
