Mushrooms of British Columbia (book)
24

Dozens of my photos have been published in Mushrooms of British Columbia (by Andy Mackinnon and Kem Luther), which is the bestselling book in BC this week - it came out last month. It is a 500-page field guide to over 350 of the more common species, and refers to 850 species in total.

All of my contributions were taken by available light with Pentax cameras, from the Optio 555 and *ist Ds to the KP. Most of the KP photos were made using Pixel Shift. Here is a sampling.

Geastrum saccatum (Optio 555); common name: Earthstar

Boletus edulis (*ist Ds); common name: Porcini, Cepe, etc.

Gliophorus psittacinus (*ist Ds); common name: Parrot Mushroom

Trametes versicolor (K-5); common name: Turkey Tail

Ramaria sp. (KP); common name: a type of Coral mushroom

Gomphus clavatus (K-5 IIs); common name: Pig's Ear

Phaeolus schweinitzii (*ist Ds); common name: Dyer's Polypore

Atheniella aurantiidisca (*ist Ds); a slime mold, which is not a fungus, in the moss

Hericium erinaceus (K-5 IIs); common name: Lion's Mane

Rich!

Your pictures are not only very good for identification, but also aestethically and artisticly very appealing.

The Boletus edulis is in Swedish called "Karl Johan", after a Swedish 19;th century king (imported from France) who demanded this very mushroom on his plate when in season. Still very popular, also with us commoners.

Thanks for posting!

Hello MaKeR

Very nice pictures !

Now I don't eat mushrooms, but is it apposite to say to some 'Bon appétit' ?

Did you used LV or do you use a refconverter ?

best regards. KPM2

Excellent photos, very clearly showing what's interesting to see in each mushroom, they are a convincing argument to buy the book if everything is as good as that

Re: Mushrooms of British Columbia (book)

Kjell, thank you for adding that interesting bit of history about B. edulis. [Edit: I forgot to include the English common name of this mushroom: King Bolete.] I think this may be the mushroom with the most common names, as it is so prized and sought after. Fortunately, it is pretty common - it even grows on my property every year, including this week. But I hardly ever get to it before maggots infest it :-(.

Thanks.

Rich

Hello, KPM2.

Thank you, and yes, you can say "Bon appétit" in reference to Cepes, Pig's Ear, and Lion's Mane. The latter is believed to have many health benefits.

I almost never pick mushrooms to eat, myself, preferring to "Leave No Trace", particularly when I find them in public parkland. (You can be jailed for picking mushrooms in Canada's national parks.)

Up to the K200D, my cameras did not have Live View, and although I have a refconverter, I almost never used it. I just got down on the ground and performed contortions to look through the viewfinder. The K-5 and K-5 IIs gave me Live View, and the KP gave me a tilting screen as well, which is very handy for this kind of work.

I use Live View and Composition Adjustment after initially composing the photo through the viewfinder.

Thanks.

Rich

Thank you for commenting, Jeremie. The photos are an essential part of a field guide, and those in this book are being well received.

If I may ask, what lens you used if you remember, for the photo of the slime mold ?

It's one of my favorites from the set.

Re: Mushrooms of British Columbia (book)

Now that's a book I need to get, living in BC we are always wondering what the species of mushrooms are and if we can eat them!

Thanks for posting this and great photos!

Jeremie, the EXIF data (for that photo from 2007) says "A lens", so I confidently believe that I used the Voigtländer 125mm f/2.5 macro lens. It is my most prized lens, which I bought new in K mount, and still use frequently.

There is a travelling exhibit to promote the book, and that photo (which was taken in a old growth forest that I plan to visit today) is the ending photo on it. (The Parrot Mushroom is the opening photo.) I would love to capture a similar scene again, but I haven't encountered one.

Thanks.

Rich

Thank you, Tom.

I will say that the book contains great photos by several other photographers, mostly amateur.
