Not sure why hardly anyone else is commenting, I think they must be jealous.

Re: Recent Tanzania Adventure

Great shots! My wife and I accompanied my daughter son-in-law, and two teenage grandkids on safari in Tanzania in August 2019, and I fell in love with the place. Very highly recommended!

Doug,

We spoke two years ago about this trip.  Our trip was cancelled in 2020 due to the virus.

At that time you offered some advice which I thank you for.  You suggested taking a longer lens than the 55-210.  I purchased a new 70-350 prior to the trip and I am most happy I did.  A little heavy, but I great performer.

Thanks.

I only came home with 2,000-3,000 and I'm still trying to sort them out.

Was certainly a trip of a lifetime.

Must be a fantastic experience, even more so coming back with plenty of great shots. But something bugs me, you often use positive exposure compensation and that seem to result in excessively high ISO in bright sunny conditions, which is "a shame" when taking photos in such a distant place that one does not go often (unless you live there!).

I agree, Erwann, the ISO's were a bit high in some instances.

Fortunately the A6400 handles the high ISO better than some other cameras.

The exposure compensation was done while in the viewfinder.  Although the backgrounds were quite bright, I wanted to be sure the animals, my main focus, captured all the detail.

I shot mostly on manual, using as high a shutter speed as I could, often 1/1000 and used an aperture around f8 to insure a sharp image.

That is the same approach (&Auto ISO) I used on my Safari. I had the A6600 and the RX10iv. I rather have a little high ISO than a blurry image. However, I set the max limit ISO to 3200 on the A6600 & 1600 on the RX10iv.

Hi Richard

Your photos capture such a great variety really well.  What an absolute treat it must have been.  I hope to one day enjoy such a safari.

I used auto ISO as well.  I might have set a little higher maximum at 4,000.

I also brought two bodies, an a6400 with 70-350 and an a6000 with 16-70.  I never removed a lens from the body in an effort to avoid dust.  Sensors remained clean throughout the trip.

Glad to have been of help! The bigger lens is heavier, but since travelers are in the Land Cruiser most of the time (the alternative is to be eaten by lions), it shouldn't be a major concern for anyone planning such a trip.

All are fantastic images of the wildlife, however, my preferred shots of the animals-are the leopard resting in the tree and the portrait of the mail lion. But the two shots in your series of the people are particularly nice. Thanks for sharing.
