Samsung galaxy nx in 2021, android outdated?
1

Hey people

I can buy a new galaxy nx for 400usd with the kit lens which seems like a good deal?

However my question is... Is the camera useable in 2021?

Because it is running android and it's probably a very old android version I'm not sure about this camera's in 2021.

Anybody have any experience with it? 😊

Re: Samsung galaxy nx in 2021, android outdated?

I recently acquired another galaxy nx (I owned one in around 2015)

The version of Android is very old and I've struggled with some apps, in particular WhatsApp. Facebook messenger does just about work though for sending pics to family.

One feature that does still work well is the WiFi direct for quickly sending pictures to your phone. It may be that this is only compatible with Samsung phones but it's a much better experience than any equivalent feature I've used on any other camera, including the NX1.

The camera itself is excellent, probably comparable to the nx30 but I think the video quality of the galaxy nx is better (newer codec)

Bear in mind that you may have issues with some lenses - I couldn't get the 50-150mm to work with it.

Overall, if you can get it for a good price I think it might still be worth it. It's handy to have it run Android, even though it's a very old version, and even though Samsung appeared to have skimped on the hardware for that side of things. As a camera it's still very good and the large screen and excellent grip make it a joy to use.

Thanks!

I only want to use it as a camera, don't care about apps tbh.

Are nx cameras reliable to still last a few years or longer?

I'd say overall they are quite reliable. The main issue people have reported is with some of the dials becoming sticky and not working. However, the Galaxy NX isn't really susceptible to this as most of the controls are on the touch screen.

Thanks

I had a nx300 or 3000 6-7 years ago for a short period.

I really liked it for the short period used but back then Samsung was a bit to expensive to further invest in.

I'm looking to get 2-3 NX cameras now, the kit lenses and 30 / 45mm. And a few extra batteries.

Lenses are very hard to find though, bodies seems to be ok.

Will the lenses in good condition last for many years when threated well? 😊

I have two Galaxy NXs. One is still new and unopened. I have owned a number of Samsung cameras (NX2000, NX3000, NX3300, NX300, NX500 x3 and several NX Minis, I kept two). The GNX is my favorite. To me it has its own unique output, even if it says that it is based on the NX300.

I just love the form factor. It's slimmer than most DSLRs even though it has a DSLR sized body. With one of the pancakes it makes for a slim combo.

It has its quirks and the phone side of it is no longer current, though I have no issues with WhatsApp. But even if the phone side becomes so outdated that it's no longer usable, I still love the big big screen and the way the camera fits my hands. My favorite combo is using it with the 16-50 PZ and the Ricoh DW-6. It fits on it without an adapter. Both are 43mm. The Ricoh glass adds a special character and makes it into a super wide lens.

Definitely a quirky camera but the output is amazing. I own two Fujis, several MFT cameras and a Ricoh APSC. While they all have their strength, the color tonality of the Galaxy NX is my favorite with the Panasonic G9 close second. I also had the NX500 and just won another one in an auction that I could not resist. But the Galaxy NX for me beats the NX500 in jpeg output.

Exactly! I really adore Samsung output (and Panasonic too, the S5 looks great)

I'm happy to read that the nx works great without the phone part. I just hope they can still last for many years to come!

Gimbal setup with external mic

I recently got hold of a cheap boya shotgun mic that works with the galaxy nx - comes with a cable for smartphone (which I suppose the galaxy nx shares a likeness with as it has a headphone/mic port.)

Here it is on my gimbal with 14mm manual lens - attached to a focus motor so I can adjust focus while shooting video - no focus peaking in video mode on the galaxy nx but the big screen helps.
