G1X vs G3X vs G15 vs G16
1

Hello,

I have an Canon SX60, before that I owned an SX50.
Simply because it has a Optical Zoom.

I have plenty of NB-10L batteries. And wanted to buy a second canon
mostly used for video recording and sports event photo shoots.

I would like to buy a Canon that also uses the NB-10L batteries.

What would be a better move between the 4 models: G1X vs G3X vs G15 vs G16??

Thanks

These cameras saw daylight between 2012 and 2015, so, very probably only used ones will be avaliable. My experience in buying used cameras is not good. Those described as mint were indeed far from it, and a Nikon P7700 so described was unusable.

Now, G1X/G3X and G15/G16 sums up to smaller sensor + lighter lens versus larger sensor + darker lens. I used a G1X for a while, and found no discernible image quality diference when paired to G15/16 series.

I have been using a G15 and a G16 for 6 years and to fulfill my needs felt no urge to upgrade.

I know what you mean about sellers description regarding condition, very annoying. Must confess to being surprised you saw little or no difference between G1X and the G15/16. The G1X produces outstanding pictures, although it’s quirky user experience is annoying me again.

I think any one of those G models would be fine. I have the G16,

And can be hard to find.

The popular "enthusiast" type 1.7" sensor cameras availability becoming more limited, hence prices for one in (a truly) "good condition" are generally at a premium.

When I do occasionally do see a used G15, G16, S110, etc. at B&H, Adorama, KEH, etc. are usually sold within a day.

... My experience in buying used cameras is not good. Those described as mint were indeed far from it, and a Nikon P7700 so described was unusable. ...

Hence why I've always preferred to spend a little more and buy use cameras/ gear from a reputable online reseller that has at least a 30-Day Full Refund period.  Since the demise of my local camera store, for past 30+ years been buying from B&H Photo or Adorama.  Used gear purchased quality has always been as described.  With B&H Photo with generally free shipping and no sales tax (currently when you purchase with B&H Photo Card) helps to make B&H price a little more competitive.

Of course for Canon camera, lenses, etc. I always first check the Canon Certified Refurbished Sites—as they come with Canon 1-Year Warranty.

Cheers,
Jon

In addition Panet's comments, kinda up to you as to which camera best meets "YOUR" photography needs/ preferences, and budget.

If you do not mind not having a built-in EVF and do not do much low light shooting the G3X with it's newer/ larger 1"-Type sensor and 24-600mm EFL lens would make a good general purpose/ travel camera, and wildlife photography.

I would 'HIGHLY' recommend ta,king the time doing some online searches to find Full Review (that has full size sample images) for each camera to find out which one is the best one for you.

I have the G15 and like it very much for a enthusiast pocketable compact.  For "myself" (mainly shoot RAW) there was not enough difference between the G16 and G15 to warrant the cost of buying the G16.

There are plenty of G15 vs G16 type older posts in this forum; just use the
"Search this forum"; e.g., HERE.

I had the G1X.  IQ wise its a great camera, but with slow overall operation and somewhat dismal close-focusing (Marco) operation. See the DPR G1X Review HERE.

After you've read reviews, post questions you may have for further help.

Good Luck.
Jon

Re: G1X vs G3X vs G15 vs G16

Just to had to my question...
I read a few reviews and compares about those 4 models.
Like I said I'm looking to have a second camera and benefit the dozen of NB-10L
batteries that I already have.

I'm in Montreal... anfd G1X in great condition is sold for about 250$CAD
The G3X is solf for 700$CAD.
I agree that often mint condition does'nt mean the reality. But i'm not in a rush to buy.
And until today, most of the sellers let me take pictures and videos on my on SD card so I can review them home prior to buy them. Then I have 12h to decide if I take or not.

Today I went to see a G1X... sold as Mint... And seriously... Camera looks brand new!
Owner had 3 cameras and was only using the G1X for some specific video projects.

Probably i'll take this one since he sells everything that he as... Tripod, 3 batteries, bag.
