A screw dropped from EF 17-40
1

Hi,

I got a screw dropped from the backend of EF 17-40 after the lens accidentially fell on the table. I don't know what is it used for and is it matter? Thanks!

Everything seems all right excpet that screw.

I found a healthy lens picture, compared with mine , it seems the screw is from the red section.

It looks to be a cammed roller / guide so the internals parts move in a certain direction and a certain distance.  You may be able to get away with using the lens without it, but I highly recommend getting the lens serviced.

if the screw belongs to where you have marked, how did it fall out? the lens is covered. sounds very strange. but i would put the screw where it belongs before using it again.

I took a picture of mine. It's so wired ,how that screw could come out?

God's well works in mysterious ways but that is a good question. if the lens wasn't opened, had no right to come out

Re: A screw dropped from EF 17-40

Screws can work themselves loose from vibrations, especially vibrations from cars and airplanes.  I took a photo trip to Alaska a few years ago.  Once I got there I tried to mount my 500mm F4 lens to my camera body and it seemed wobbly.  I discovered that many of the screws holding the lens mount to the lens body had worked loose, almost to the point of falling out. Fortunately someone else on the photo workshop had a screwdriver so I could tighten the screws.  Now before every trip I do two things: tighten all the screws I can see on my gear, and ensure I am carrying along a screwdriver.

I have also had a screw inside a first generation 100-400mm lens work loose and jam the zooming mechanism.  So apparently these things happen.
