Telephoto for Rebel SL1?
1

I sold my Rebel SL1 that we had been using for a photo booth to a friend. She's new to photography in general but quite interested in learning.

The camera has the basic kit lens and she's especially interested in photographing some wildlife around their rural home and hence would like to purchase a suitable telephoto. We use a number of Canon telephotos for our full frame DSLRs but I don't think she needs anything that expensive.

Any suggestions for perhaps a Canon compatible telephoto that might work for her?

I'll 2nd the 55-250 STM. It pairs nicely with the SL-1. If they're in the US, try to get one for Canon's Refurb store. Good as new with a 1 year warranty.

Absolutely the 55-250STM! It is a steal. Light, scharp, pretty Quick to focus with the SL1.

My advice is to use the hood. And it makes for a nice on the go telezoom macro with the raynox DCR250 or DCR 150.

Agree with the EF-S 55-250 STM or for a bit more reach at the $550 range, the EF 70-300 II NanoUSM

Thanks all for the input. I think the EF 70‑300 II NanoUSM at $500+ is a bit pricey for the incremental difference between some others.

Between the two options below I'm inclined to recommend the 55-250mm with STM as the best choice. Agree?

EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Refurbished: $138.99

EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Refurbished $239.99

The EF 75-300 is not a good lens.  Avoid it.

I'll 5th on the 55-250.

It's the only lens I own, and I like it a lot.

The plague?!? YIKES-- that must be one gawd-awful lens!

Thanks for the tip. Consider it avoided.

old design from the less critical film-era. More than that, it does not have image stabilization.

The 70-300's with IS are good (EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM) to better (EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS II USM (aka Nano-USM)) to best (EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM). But the EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS STM more than holds it's own against them at a fraction of the price and size/weight.  And like the better-best versions, has non-rotating front barrel which simplifies use with a polarizing filter.

+1 to picking up the sold-separately hood.

Thanks for the tip. Consider it avoided.

If you need 300mm (480mm cropped), it's a perfectly fine lens that's been around for many years. Is it as sharp as the 55-250? Not quite, but close and the extra 50mm reach is especially nice for birds, wildlife, etc. I use the first gen on my old XS body once in awhile but the newer USM model is better.
