DIY stereo camera - Raspberry Pi Version 2, very interesting!
1

Has anybody on the forum tried the Raspberry Pi stereo camera? I did a search here but the responses were from about 6 years ago, a lifetime in the electronics world. The have a new setup that looks very interesting and it does both stills and video. I’m not a computer buff and they use a lot of jargon so I have trouble following everything they are talking about but it look like it has a lot of potential. Anyone building or have finished a StereoPi v2?  I'm interested in buying the kit but not sure of what I'm getting into (such as programming) and if it is worth it at this point.  I really want to do video ... and stills too of course.

Here is a link to the page -- https://www.crowdsupply.com/stereopi/stereopi-v2

Doesn't anybody have any experience with the Raspberry Pi stereo cameras?  The newest version sounds like it would be a good project but I'm not qualified to pass judgement.  Anybody have an opinion?

The stereopi v2 is sold in different setups.  I purchased the full build kit.  Delivery was significantly delayed due to chip shortages and some hardware changes (which then had to be tested) as a result.

I have NOT started building mine.  There is a Wiki page for this (I don't recall the link).

You have to figure out how you will supply power - it does not have a battery holder for a specific battery.

If you are looking for a kit to build then turn on and use like a Fujifilm W3 then this may not be right for you.

McPhoto thanks for the reply.  What module did you get?  The article I looked at was about the CM4 which seems to have the best features.  I will admit, the idea of making a camera from parts is going to be difficult, but I have always been interesting in electronics and it seems like this would be a good project since there is a good support group the Raspberry Pi projects. I also realize one wrong move and you can fry some very expensive parts.  Please keep me updated on how your project goes.  I'm very interested to see how it goes.

I have also thought about the Fujifilm W3 and the GoPro 3+ Black with the attachments that put two cameras together to make 3D stills and movies.  The advantage with the GoPro is you have two cameras that you can still use independently of each other.

I do have a Stereo Realist 35mm film camera and plan on using that for still images and convert the film to digital with my DSLR camera, but I also wanted to try 3D video.

McPhoto,  it has been a couple of months, have you made any progress on your Raspberry Pi project?

Here's another option for multiple Raspberry Pi cameras, including auto focus and a synchronised quad-camera option:

Thank you for the input. I checked the links and did some addition searching and I'm getting a better idea of how the Raspberry Pi system works. It looks like I need two of the 16MP cameras, a Raspberry computer modual , CM3+ is the newest and a Stereo Pi module.  I'm not sure if I can use my iMac to run the software for programming, so I might need a PC to bring everything together.

t sounds like it is ALMOST plug and play, but I don't know enough about this to make a determination.  Overall, it sounds very good and with the new cameras, it should give nice photos and HD video.

As I was searching around it seems that there is a newer board available, Module 4 instead of the CM3+.  I'm not sure if it is comparable with  Stereo Pi board but I would assume it is.  All of this Raspberry Pi stuff sounds really cool, I just don't understand all of it and how everything integrates.  But it looks like it could be used to make a better camera than the Fujifilm W3.
