PTSD from Samsung NX

I am forcing myself to change systems this year. I have been missing photo ops due to not allowing myself to buy more lenses in a dead system; at the same time, nothing has attracted me to justify spending money on switching systems. But I am at the point now where money isn't worth continuing to miss more photo ops.

I am leaning towards Nikon. I don't trust Canon's history, starting from them releasing the same un-innovative T3 DSLR under a new model name for years, to their slow embrace of mirrorless and artificial overheating issues, to their premium lens lineup to start their mirrorless system. Panasonic refuses to incorporate PDAF, and M4/3 doesn't quite provide the IQ performance I want to justify not just using my smartphone. Sony honestly checks the most boxes for me, but the NX1 is for some reason (to put to shame the other companies) still the absolute leader for me in terms of ergonomics 7 years from its release, and the Sony cameras are actively uncomfortable to hold.

Functionally the Sonys would be a better fit across several checkboxes (more reliable AF, better battery life, articulated screen, better preamp for video audio, 3rd party lens options, the list goes on). None of them huge separators from the competition nor deal breakers, but it adds up. However, I am coming to realize how the camera feels in my hand is hugely important. I don't want to feel like I have to actively squeeze to have a secure grip on my camera. The NX1 rests tension free in my hand, and the Nikon Z cameras are the closest to that feeling. I always read in multiple reviews, "Sony is marginally better in ABCD...XYZ...but the Nikon still has its advantages, like ergonomics." It always felt like a consolation prize for the loser, but ergonomics matter a lot. After all, it's what will be your muscle memory for years to come.

However, last year when Nikon's whole financial situation came out...I don't know...this is where my Samsung NX PTSD kicks in. What if I am doomed to pick camera systems that will be dead in a few years? 😂It is hard to imagine a camera world without Nikon, but bigger businesses have failed in history. Is it the fate of NX users to be attracted to companies with the smallest market share?

Anyway, just thought I'd share my #lifeafterNX journey for any of you NX people who enjoy such stories.

Ah besides the PDAF, not sure where you got the IQ reference, but my Panasonic G9 with the 12-60 2.8-4 or the Oly 12mm 2.0 literally makes my heart jump when it comes to IQ. Realistic yet cinematic, stunning.

I am still a Samsung user with two Galaxy NXs and two NX Minis. I also have a Ricoh APSC and two Fujis with top lenses.

The Panasonic in my eyes is not behind any of them regarding IQ. What may be missing in the ISO department is balanced by the outstanding dual image stabilization. Though I have no issues up to ISO 6400 with my Panny. Had 3 Sonys too and I by far prefer the G9 output. But of course that is my personal opinion / taste.

Pentax might be worth a look … not an enormous range of cameras, but with lens compatibility going back over 45 years you'll probably be able to find something to suit most circumstances, though not necessarily new

Aha I may have been going on a bit of a rant. Obviously M4/3 is much better than a smartphone, but I already hit the upper limits of APS noise for things I shoot, and M4/3 would be a step down, it's not ideal esp. combined with their AF system. Panasonic FF I have no issues with from IQ standpoint.

The X-T4 was almost perfect. Unfortunately the IBIS stuttering on some panning in video is a deal breaker for me, and their firmware update did not really fix it. That plus, although I don't need many lenses, a lot of their lenses are not up to date to perform to the spec that Fuji has released on their bodies (AF performance, focus breathing and noise in video). I did see that Fuji is finally getting some 3rd party lens support, but more lenses beyond that one Tamron that got announced probably won't come out for at least another year or two.

I keep getting tempted to just ignore the IBIS thing and tell myself it's one of those review things that don't really show up in the real world that often, but too often there is a single clip I can't reshoot or substitute with an alternative shot, and I know the IBIS stuttering will drive me nuts in the future for when I am not using a gimbal or tripod.

The grip also looks like the NX10's. I've felt it in hand and while it's comfortable and cute for its shape like the NX10, I much prefer the full grip of the NX1 style.

I sometimes consider moving away, but then I think that I've got nearly every lens in the system, plus 2 NX1s, an NX500 and a couple of others, and I think of the massive hassle of trying to list everything, which is a complete pain in the a***!

I'm sure the time will come where I have to move on, but at the moment I'm quite happy to stay

wow I do have to admit m4/3 IQ has come a long way since I tried a G something back in 2010.

What is better these days?

Long time lurker here and NX1 fan.

I would switch if there was a camera better than the NX1.  But honestly, what camera under $2000 is better than the NX1 with the two S zooms?   There still isn't a better APSC sensor.  And you can't beat the (few) Samsung lenses .

Maybe the FujiFilm X-T4 comes close.  It has IBIS and can shoot 20 FPS instead of 15.  But it uses the electronic shutter which has issues.  And while I do like FujiFilm colors, I am not a fan of X-Trans.

Besides that, nothing else comes close IMHO.  I only wish there was more stock of 'new' NX1 cameras and lenses.

I do think the X-T4 beats the NX1 in terms of noise above 3200 ISO, and color noise above ISO 800:

https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilm-x-t4-review/6

but yeah the NX system is certainly a keeper and was designed way ahead of its time. I totally agree there's no big draw to change right now....I've just seen a few threads here and there about someone's 50-150mm not working and I'd hate to buy one and have 0 support if mine breaks, whereas I'd at least have a warranty or return policy if I invested that money in an active system.

I hope you enjoy your NX1 for a long time!

Use ISO 1600, push the shadows and apply some chroma noise reduction. Should be similar to X-T4 at 3200.

One strategy is watch used camera sites and pick up backs of your favorite lenses.  It is an expense, but adds piece of mind and costs less than a new system.

This is a good strategy but so far the lenses are holding up better than the camera bodies. I had an issue with my NX1 and recording video. I bought a spare body and then the original started working again!

Now I've got one permanently attached to my gimbal 😀

Well, now you have two!  The bodies I think are easier to find.  If taken care of I think the lenses will last longer, but its good to have a back of the ones you love.

Re: What is better these days?

update for anyone who cares:

man I was so gungho when I posted this ha! this is why i don't allow myself impulse purchases. anyway, by chance I was browsing ebay for NX gear again...I finally found a 50-200mm listing that was under $200. some haggling back and forth and I got it down to what I think is a reasonable price for a 7-years-dead system. not that I've been checking diligently, but they've all been $399+ for the past few years, which to me was enough money that I would rather put that toward a new system.

the lack of anything longer than 55mm (kit lens) was the main sore point for me...yeah, it'll be nice in the future to have constant f2.8 mid and tele zoom lenses. but this will save me literally thousands of dollars from changing systems for at least another year or two for what is after all a hobby. not mention new memory cards, new photo editing software (i'm still on lightroom 5 which came with my camera), probably a new computer to handle higher quality photos and videos lol (mine already lags a lot when editing the h.265 files from the NX1)...on and on.

Plus, from other brands, we might see in the next 1-3 years:

  • Nikon take the lead with the Z 5/6/7 II/IIIs (and possibly the Z9, but not interested in that tier of camera).
  • Lower A7IV and A7RIV prices from Sony, with continued lens updates (like they just got with the phenomenal 70-200 f2.8 refresh and the Tamron 28-75 update)
  • hopefully Fuji keeps updating their sometimes out of date lenses,  and we'll get a stronger look at what incoming 3rd party lens support will look like
  • Canon...I like Canon too, but they are in many ways the most expensive system so not for me (Nikon = cheap bodies, Sony = cheap lenses, Canon = expensive bodies and lenses). and call me anal but their ON/OFF switch being a full dial on the left of the camera body drives me nuts

time to hole up with my safe and reliable NX1...I can lay off buying research for now.

I have already the R7, some RF and multiple EFs with 3 different adapters. R6 mkII will be my next purchase, but still can't leave any of my NX behind..still capable to produce amazing results in multiple fronts..

Amazingly, in terms of thermal reduction, ergonomics and menu system, still #1.. for the size and weight, and probably the best all around lens system in APS-C (though Fuji has more options right now, still in some aspects NX is better).

Best SOOC also..

Also, RF-S system is non existent as of now..it will take them many years to reach NX capabilities, and even EF-S had some obvious gaps in it..
