I am forcing myself to change systems this year. I have been missing photo ops due to not allowing myself to buy more lenses in a dead system; at the same time, nothing has attracted me to justify spending money on switching systems. But I am at the point now where money isn't worth continuing to miss more photo ops.
I am leaning towards Nikon. I don't trust Canon's history, starting from them releasing the same un-innovative T3 DSLR under a new model name for years, to their slow embrace of mirrorless and artificial overheating issues, to their premium lens lineup to start their mirrorless system. Panasonic refuses to incorporate PDAF, and M4/3 doesn't quite provide the IQ performance I want to justify not just using my smartphone. Sony honestly checks the most boxes for me, but the NX1 is for some reason (to put to shame the other companies) still the absolute leader for me in terms of ergonomics 7 years from its release, and the Sony cameras are actively uncomfortable to hold.
Functionally the Sonys would be a better fit across several checkboxes (more reliable AF, better battery life, articulated screen, better preamp for video audio, 3rd party lens options, the list goes on). None of them huge separators from the competition nor deal breakers, but it adds up. However, I am coming to realize how the camera feels in my hand is hugely important. I don't want to feel like I have to actively squeeze to have a secure grip on my camera. The NX1 rests tension free in my hand, and the Nikon Z cameras are the closest to that feeling. I always read in multiple reviews, "Sony is marginally better in ABCD...XYZ...but the Nikon still has its advantages, like ergonomics." It always felt like a consolation prize for the loser, but ergonomics matter a lot. After all, it's what will be your muscle memory for years to come.
However, last year when Nikon's whole financial situation came out...I don't know...this is where my Samsung NX PTSD kicks in. What if I am doomed to pick camera systems that will be dead in a few years? 😂It is hard to imagine a camera world without Nikon, but bigger businesses have failed in history. Is it the fate of NX users to be attracted to companies with the smallest market share?
Anyway, just thought I'd share my #lifeafterNX journey for any of you NX people who enjoy such stories.
