Camera for the Month of October - SD1/M
2

Thanks to everyone who has contributed in the past whether with displays or with feedback .  There have been a lot of very good and very varied images on the DP2/S/X  thread this past month.  We have now featured  the SD9, SD10, SD14, SD15, DP1/S/X and DP2/S/X.

The SD1/M has been around a while so I expect there will be a lot of images to show.  I recommend limiting the post to 5 and if you so desire, do a 2nd posting.

The  Merrill line has come under some criticism as being on the flat side or not as lively/alive as the older models.  So feedback on  your thoughts as we go through the month wiould be much appreciated.

Ok time to show off the camera.

Thanks

Rick

Across America with the SD1 Merrill
9

I love my SD1 Merrill, but I miss my SD Quattro H. It's definitely an excellent camera, and whether it be with my 8-16 EX, 100-400 OS C, or one of my Art lenses, I can make some high-quality images with the SD1 Merrill. I don't know about comparing to an SD15 or some other pre-Merrill body, but I like the colors I get from my Merrill about as much as I like the colors I got from my SD Quattro H.

About these photos: I shot the first one with my 14-24mm f2.8 Art lens and the last one with my 50mm f1.4 Art. I shot Devil's Tower with my 24-70mm f2.8 OS Art lens, and I shot the bison with my 100-400 OS C handheld, probably out the window of my SUV, because I don't want to get killed by a mad bison. I used my 8-16 for the rainbow shot. It does bother me that when I set my 8-16 on infinity, sometimes it seems to focus just a few yards out, and stuff a few hundred yards away seems to be slightly out of focus. I thought I knew this lens better by now.

I will persevere . . . at least until I get a Tokina 10-17mm fisheye and a 14-24 f2.8 G for my Nikon.

I have no experience with pre-merrill devices, other than a SD14 that I received a week ago. I thought the SD14 would be a kind of an older SD1, but they are really different, from the ergnomic to the rendering. I had the SD Quattro H, really different again, and with EVF. Well, all around I like the SD1 and I tend to go for "contrasty" renderings :

Re: Across America with the SD1 Merrill

Nice set...I sent you an email.  I have a tokina 11-16.  I have had it for years. Originally for U/W but I an not sure it even went u/w at all as I was using the NIkon mainly for macro u/w.  If you want to try it  I can send it to you and if you can use it you can buy it from me.  I need to unload some of my Nikon lenses as they are just sitting around in my de-humidifier.  My 300 died on me years ago.

Re: Calf - Low Res

Is that the old 50?  Looks very good.  At first glance I wasn't shore of the species (dog).

Thanks

It's the EX DG macro f/2.8 model (not Art).

Before that, there was a non-EX model and before that a manual focus only with an aperture ring. Quite a good series ...

Re: Calf - Low Res

I had that and then got the Art version.  Biggest improvement was the quality wide open.  That version (pre-art) came out about the same time as the 85 f1.4 and comparing the two at 1.4 showed a substantial deficiency in the 50.
