Best autofocus settings for family shots on XT-10?

Over the last 18 months I have transitioned from mostly travel photos to mostly family photos, including action photos of my 1 year old.

Unfortunately, I have missed nearly every shot of the 1 year old. She moves around too much and I'm often shooting indoors in less than ideal lighting.

A bit of research suggests that the XT-10 isn't a good performer for this use case but that there may be some tweaks I can make to setup to improve this.

I'm starting from scratch in this area so video or tutorial recommendations also appreciated.

Re: Best autofocus settings for family shots on XT-10?

The shutter speed has to be high enough to stop the motion, and that depends on how fast the subject is moving... but for a child I'd guess a 500th would be fine. If you open the aperture as much as possible and jack up the film speed to 3200 you ought to get a good exposure, but if that doesn't do it then more light will be needed.  I have a T-10 and I think it's great, but no camera performs well without adequate light... and of course the zoom lens you're using is rather slow... a prime with an F 1.2 or 1.4 bottom end would be MUCH better for indoor or lower-light stuff !

Cheers,

Jean

Hi.  For a fast moving toddler use the faster shutter speeds as suggested but also for XT10 specific use the AFC setting and ensure you use the more central phase detect aufofocus points. Also use burst mode.  I got some great shots of mine, even using the 56mm F1.2 and it's narrow depth of field.  Quick burst, phase detect, crop a bit after.  Always got a keeper in the burst.  Have fun.
