lens question for new photographer travelling with a T6i
1

I'm looking for some recommendations for a less expensive landscape/low light lens to fit a T6i.

My son will be going on a post high school gap year six week trip to Hawaii. He opted for a DSLR instead of a more compact travel camera. He is a new photographer. I was able to pick up a used T6i along with a Tamron 18-270 lens. He also has the Canon 18-55 kit lens which I think is redundant to take. The Tamron is nice but the aperture is 3.5-6.3. He'd like to do some sunset shooting and landscapes. I've also been told that where they will be gets very dark by 6-7pm. So, I'd like to find a preferably used lens that would help in those conditions. Maybe something in the 12-35 or 5omm range with an aperture lower than 3.5. They will be travelling light so a full size tripod is not viable. I have a smaller tabletop tripod that can also be strapped to something like a tree or pole to assist.

I've been using a small micro 4/3 travel camera for years and haven't been keeping up with the full size DSLR options.

Time is getting short...he leaves in two weeks. So, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Gary

IMHO any lens will go well with his T6i - I have the various lens but maybe take an SD880 to go along with his iPhone or whatever he has. Been to Hawaii for our honeymoon - loved it there.

Canon's nifty 50 comes to mind.  Lightweight, small, inexpensive, f1.8, and it has very good image quality.

Canon has a couple of options. The T6i is a crop sensor camera so the lenses you're looking for are going to be EF-S lenses for true focal range. If you get an EF lens the crop (1.6x I believe) will be applied to the focal length. So a 50mm lens becomes an 80mm equivalent.

If you got a 35mm lens it would roughly be a 50mm lens on his camera. Canon makes an EF 35 f/2 USM IS lens, and although it has been discontinued, you can still find it available on eBay, MPB, and other used camera sites.

Canon also has two EF-S lenses that are pretty good. There's the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM and the EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM. USM is just a faster focusing motor compared to STM but the image quality is no different. The IS is image stabilization which helps with handheld shots taken in lower light due to lower shutter speeds.

All three of these lenses are small/compact enough for travel and landscape-type photography. I hope this helps you in your search.

IMO, he should take the EF-S 10-18mm STM, EF-S 18-55mm STM, EF-S 55-250mm STM and the EF-S 24mm STM. All of these lenses deliver very good IQ, are compact, lightweight and affordable. The EF-S 18-55mm STM kit lenses are very good performers and underrated. The STM lenses are also very good lenses for video recording. What he needs for good landscape photos in poor light is a tripod. Using any of the above lenses on a tripod will give very good results. Especially the 10-18mm for landscape photos.

Another lens that I own, and love to use, is the EF-S 15-85mm that has a FF equivalent range of 24-136mm. It delivers excellent IQ, has fast USM AF and very good IS. I use this lens 90% of the time on my SL2. It isn't the best for video recording if this is important. It can be found on the used market. I bought mine used for $200.

Also, IMO, the Tamron 18-270mm (or any super zoom lens for that matter) doesn't deliver very good sharpness or IQ due to its super wide focal range. To many compromises have to be made to have such a wide focal range in one lens. Any of the EF-S lenses I listed will easily best it regarding IQ and sharpness. Especially the EF-S 55-250mm STM. If you buy this lens make sure it is the STM version.

The EF-S 24mm f2.8 is indeed a great little lens for a crop camera.

I totally agree and second this recommendation.  I have all 4 lenses myself and they all perform flawlessly on my Rebel T5 (1200D).

You cannot go wrong here.

The 24mm F2.8 STM pancake lens is a must have as is the EF 50mm F1.8 STM

Both cost so little and are so good in terms of sharpness, clarity, through frame acuity, and colour rendition anyone with any rebel would be mad not to own them

The Sigma 17-50mm EX DC OS HSM F2.8 is an excellent prime-like quality fast zoom and the price is amazing especially used.  Really prime lens type quality and F2.8 right through.  Professional grade image quality and reviews better for IQ than both the NKON and Canon 17-55 F2.8's!!!!!

If he wants to try wide angle the 10-18mm STM is a slow lens but boy is it sharp and the IQ is amazing again.

All Canon APS-C specific lenses are excellent for IQ and are bargains at the same time.

That Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM though, killer lens.  Big though
