E-PL10

I just purchased a new E-PL10 from Japan at a very good price.  But I noticed that there is no mention of this new Pen when doing a search on this forum.
Perhaps this new version follows too closely the release of the E-PL9.  I'm also thinking there may be a surplus of this newer model, hence the reasonable pricing.

ps: body only, as I have plenty of lenses already.

I think maybe raist3d made posts about the epl series. He has some really good shots. The epl series camera does not seem very popular on this forum.

the EPL10 = EPL9 with a firmware upgrade to do e-shutter in all PASM modes and ability to do some tweaks to some filters.  So maybe near no one here has one.

I have one, the Kuro. It's a nice looking camera, but it has that more limited feature set.

My first E-PL body was the 7, which was the first with the improved 3-axis IS. I already had both the E-PM1 and E-PM2, so I had the E-VF2; and I bought the E-VF4 specifically for the E-PL7. And I have the mic port as well. When the E-PL9 came out without the accessory port, I quickly snagged an E-PL8 so I'd have a spare E-PL body with the accessory port.

I ended up getting the E-PL10 just because it looked so nice, which is probably not a great reason. It does have that pop-up flash that you can tilt back to get some bounce if you have the right ceiling.

I've shot a lot with the E-PL7, it was my take-everywhere camera for a long time. Lately it's mostly been the PEN-F and the OM-Ds.

The only thing I really don't care for in that entire series E-PL7 to E-PL10 is the way the flip screen works. It does that little vertical slide thing before you pull it out or put it back. Just kind of a tactile nuisance.

Anyway, I think the Kuro is probably the best looking of the E-PL series, and it's a capable little body if you don't need an EVF. Other than the reduced feature set, it's little changed from the E-PL7.

the ep7 fixed this  though I don’t mind the dance

I would get an ep7 over epl10 at this point (which I did) but on a budget the epl10 is quite capable  I just can’t go back to the idler sensor with an AA filter

Re: E-PL10 from Japan?

Greetings,

Out of curiosity, did your camera come with Japanese display.  If so, was it difficult to change it to English?  Also, did you have to pay import fees?  The reason I'm asking is, I was considering ordering a camera from Japan, it seems that they often have good deals.  But, wanted to hear from someone who has actually done it.  Thanks for any info.

I don't have the EPL10 but I think all these cameras on first boot will show you a menu of languages and you pick which one you want. It's how the EP7 was from Japan.

A couple of camera brands make Japan only models, Panasonic and Sony I think are the two culprits. Though there seems to be some tricks available to get all languages on some. The rest always have English somewhere and it's easy to sort out when setting up.

It depends on what country you are shipping to as far as customs.  I ordered through Lazada Philippines which charges no customs upon arrival.

The menu was already set up upon 1st turn-on to go to the language & date/time set-up.  But the instruction manual is all in Japanese.

Only problems I've encountered are with the menus.  They are quite different than E-M

I like to use more than 1 Art filter at a time, however there is no provision for "bracketing" (using all or some of the Art filters simultaneously).  I can obtain a RAW ORF file and then modifiy it post-process, I suppose.

Re: E-PL10

It has an interesting Panoramic function.  A bar appears on the LCD and you simply pivot L to R and stop when the bar shows fully to the right.
The camera also has an interesting menu set-up which differs from the O-MDs.  Amazing how many abilities they can pack in such a small package.  I'll mostly use it on the street, hanging from the neck and with the silent shutter.

It took a while but now the Olympus-Imaging (=OM Systems) has the sole Pen as the E-PL10 listed at Oz$999 (=US$750 today) for the single lens kit. https://shop.olympus.com.au/cameras/pen?___store=auview

No E-P7 seen at all on the Aussie site.

A couple of popular stores I checked have no Pens listed at all, only the OM-D variations and kits.

I have the awful feeling that the Pens may finally be done for and we may only see mock SLR shaped cameras in future. I do hope that I am wrong.

I'm not surprised, ep7 is a good camera, but was met with a lot of anger from this forum at least.

I am interested in buying the E-PL10 but had a few questions about the 4k video:

Is the field of view cropped in during 4k video, and if so how much?

How is the rolling shutter/jello effect when panning the camera?

Does the in-body stabilization work well, such as when walking?

Thanks!

See https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympus-pen-e-pl10-review and well down the page they say "The E-PL10 can capture 4K video at 30p and 24p. Despite having a dedicated video recording button, you have to set the mode dial to the video position in order to capture 4K (it'll only capture 1080p in every other shooting mode). There is a crop when shooting 4K, which is increased if you're using the sensor shift + electronic stabilization feature to get smoother videos. The sensor shift-only stabilization is almost as effective and has no crop, so it's worth trying first."

So how much of a crop is unknown of course as they seem to contradict themselves in that statement. Crop or no crop? Sure there's some cropping with the optional digital stabilisation added to the IBIS, but IBIS alone = no crop from what I understand from that extract, maybe.

How is the rolling shutter/jello effect when panning the camera?

Never do fast video pans, it always hurts. I would expect it to be better than my old E-P5 where I have not noticed any problems with my usually slower pans.

Does the in-body stabilization work well, such as when walking?

The 5 axis stabilisation is great on my old E-P5, makes walking videos actually watchable.  Spookily steady is how I first described it when first viewed. The IBIS removes the roll factor which spoils most lens only stabilised videos.
