Now that DNG has crept into the world of SIGMA with their later cameras and not forgetting the Kalpanika option, I was wondering about member's usage of it when it is possible.

Even I could convert SD9 X3Fs to DNG with Adobe's converter but I hate Adobe ... ;-(

I answered more often than not since I mostly use my fp in DNG+JPEG mode. For my dp2 Quattro I use X3F+JPEG because (unlike the fp) the camera cannot re-process a DNG file.

It would be great if a future Foveon camera managed to use DNG as its native format, especially now that Apple has embraced linear DNG for the iPhone.

Understood. Thanks all so far for voting.

Agreed.

  • For all the pre-Merrill cameras, I use Adobe Camera Raw to open x3f files. There is no DNG conversion because the files can be opened directly. I always use camera profiles for my pre-Merrill cameras.
  • For the Merrill cameras, I use the Photoshop plugin + Adobe Camera Raw for 95% of my pictures. For the remaining 5% (the tricky ones), I use Sigma Photo Pro or Kalpanika (DNG) when I absolutely need to use camera profiles.
  • For the Quattro cameras, I use x3f files with the Photoshop plugin + Adobe Camera Raw (75%) / Sigma Photo Pro (5%) or native DNG + Adobe Camera Raw (20%). The native DNG files are good and can be used effortless with camera profiles but their inefficient compression drives me nuts.
I don't use much DNG file format with my Sigma cameras but I nevertheless answered "More often than not" because I have many other cameras that deliver DNG files (mostly Pentax/Ricoh). I also convert Sony/Olympus/Panasonic RAW files to DNG before processing them.

The difficulty to use camera profiles with Merrill cameras is a real problem for me.

Cheers!

more often than not I sometimes never use it exclusively :-)

My apologies...couldn't resist.
LOL

No apology required, Rick. Poll questions can be a good target! Hard to make them not. :-(

I voted "Never". It's just SPP all the time. I guess I'm easily pleased :-P

Talking of polls, I wonder how many times people unsuccessfully log in? I just had 3 unsuccessful goes - typ-OHs, you know :-|

I am getting better processing fp L DNGs in SPP. I've been avoiding Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) consistently so far. I wonder why fp and fp L do not produce X3F raws, but I guess it is because the sensors are Bayer and X3F is mainly intended for the three-layer Foveon-type sensor.

I really like how Sigma has implemented Fill Light for the fp L. It's like an easy way to get close to HDR.

When I owned a sd Quattro, it really bothered me that the camera supported a format (DNG) that SPP did not, and so far as I know SPP still does not support it!

I tried processing sd Quattro DNGs with ACR, found it uninspiring. I agree with others that X3F is better if the camera makes one.
