200 F2 which TC?

I have a 200 F2 vr1 and also a the latest 2.0 TC from Nikon however im been drawn to either 1.4 or the 1.7 althou leaning towards the 1.4. Anyone have this setup and if so what do they think. Im using a D4 althou may go down the 850 route also in due course. Having used a D850 lent to me i wasnt disappointed

Re: 200 F2 which TC?

When I started surfphotography in 2006 I used the 2/200VRI with a Nikon TC20eII (it was a TC20, looking back not sure whether it was a II version ) on a D2X in HSC mode making it a virtual 4/800mm.

Loved the reach and AF speed, at that time not very critical yet about the IQ.

D2X in HSC mode, 2/200VRI + TC20EII 1/2000s f/4.0 iso320

But when I later started using the 2/200 VRI with Nikon TC12eII on a D3 I was stunned by the increase in IQ.

Could be due to the higher pixel count of the D3 (12 megapixels vs 6 for the D2X in HSC mode) or the better IQ of the D3

D3 2/200VRI + TC14EII 1/500s f/4.0  iso400

But from then on stayed away from the TC20eII (sold it shortly after coming to the above conclusion) and only used the TC14eII from then on afterwards

Sorry just reread your post and my answer was not quite what you wanted.......

AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III from Nikon

According to this they are fully compatible. I was also quickly looking for the chart they have. I also have the latest Nikon TC-20E III converter and I am very happy with it. I only use it with my Nikon 300/2.8 AFS and my 70-200/2.8 lenses. Here are 3 examples using my Nikon 300/2.8 AFS.

I have theAF-S 300mm 2.8 G VR II.  Below are city shots with D850 full image at 50% with lens wide open with and without TC's . I think its important to look at original size or at least 50% on high resolution camera and lens fully open to see IQ capability and limitations. TC 1.7 looks slightly dated to me. It was said to not surpass TC 2.0 III for image detail.

300mm f/2.8 no TC at f/2.8 D850 original size: full image at 50%

300mm f/2.8 TC1.4 II fully open at f/4.0 420mm

300mm f/2.8 TC 2.0 III fully open at f/5.6 600mm

I used the VR2 and the 2.0iii.  You do take an IQ hit and you lose a lot of light.  The AF does slow down but not significantly.  I also think you lose the character and strengths of the lens.  But, if you need more reach it is what it is.

Re: 200 F2 + TC? All Work Well, With My 200/2 VR.

All of the current-production Nikon Tele-Converters perform VERY well on the 200/2 VR. I rarely actually use TCs on my 200/2 VR, because the balance point is shifted so far forward, due to the weight of the very densely-built 200/2 VR. I captured a few test shots, of a very mundane rock chimney, in the neighborhood, to test the combinations, and doubt that I have kept the images. The chimney has simply been a very convenient test target, half a block away.

I have an AF-S 300/4D, (pre-VR,) which has always performed so very well, that I have never felt much need to use a TC-1.4E III or TC-E17 II on our 200/2 VR, for actual out-and-about shooting. If I needed VR, however, in the ~300mm focal length range, the 200/2 VR, with a 1.4X or 1.7x TC, would be a useful combination.

Since late 2019, when we bought our pre-owned Nikkor 500/4E FL, which balances so much better than a 200/2 VR with any TC, I have only used the 200/2 VR when I specifically wanted to shoot at 200mm.

To be clear, the bare 200/2 VR, on a D700, D850, or D5, is heavy, but its beautifully-captured images are very much worth the trouble. The TC-14E III actually adds very little length, so, the balance shift is not so terribly different different from using the bare lens.

Notably, the camera makes a significant difference. Since adding a D850, in mid-2018, my Tele-Converters have seen relatively little use, as the D850’s images are so “crop-able.” Tele-Converters make more sense if using a 12MP to ~20MP camera body. I do still use D5 and D4s cameras, so our TC do still have jobs to do. The D4s, especially, seems to “play well” with the AF-S 300/4D, and the TCs.

Sorry about the rambling response, but each point seemed that it might be significant, to future readers.

By accident of availability, I learned to use Canon and Nikon DSLRs at the same time. I love specific lenses made by both Canon and Nikon, too much to quit either system. Since 2018, Leica-M has been my “mirror-less” system. I am, certainly, not an expert.
