It would help if you posted your location. 

If in North America, it's a female Rose-Breasted Grossbeak (likely migrating at this time of year).

I thought it was a Black-headed Grosbeak but now I am not so sure

It’s possible. That one had crossed my mind. A juvie (female).

Really depends on the OP’s location.  Black-headed if Western US.  Rose-breasted if Eastern US (generally).  That’s why location is so important.

I just looked again in Audubob Society Field Guide and there are a few similar birds ei. Rufous-sided Tow hee  making I.D. difficult, also many Sparrow like birds. Again thank you all for your help.

Thanks for your location.  In that case it's very likely a female or immature Black-headed Grosbeak.  Keep an eye out for her mate, then you'll know for sure...

Cornell Labs' Merlin app agrees, based on the OP's image and stated location, and identifies this as Pheucticus melanocephalus, a Black-headed Grosbeak
