I would really like to see a side by side comparison between S5 pro and Xt-4 or Xt-3 for skintones. I have found such a comparison a a forum but the photographer was trying to make the Xt-4 look like Fuji S5 which defeats the purpose of this camera  - S5 gives you nice shots sooc without hours spent on pp.

Me too! It would be interesting to see this comparison.

I really like the response the S5 delivered with a 17-55mm lens. Much more than the capture made with the XT-2 and a 1.2 / 56mm.

I find the XT cameras are all pretty good and the lenses are excellent, but looking at their DPR galleries I honestly I can’t tell the difference between their output and that from any Sony, Canon, or Nikon crop camera body!

I think XT's target is market users, who do jobs and need to keep within a certain standard. I say this because I realized that with an XT you can do whatever you want but it ends up bringing you back to where you belong: to the same market pattern. On a professional level that's great, but... sometimes it's actually quite irritating. It's like a cage: no matter how big and comfortable it is, it's still a cage. With the X-Pro (1 and 2) line, for example, that doesn't happen so much.

Good luck with that one.  The older cameras, for some really strange reason, gave you color and tones on the cheeks and the lips and an over all unique enhanced look.  Tan looking skin tones were extremely difficult for other camera brands to handle that but the S5 Pro produced a miracle.  I don’t know how but it did.  Some people don’t see it, but certain tones are indeed there.  The newer cameras don’t do that and what Fuji is producing now is this weird overall flat pink looking skin tones specially under natural light.

Yes I know that comparison and the difference is striking but some people might argue it was not a fair comparison since the XT-2 was shot at iso 1600. I have a few comparisons picked up on different forums but unfortunately not quite modern cameras vs old Fujis. I think they are still worth seeing:

Fuji S3 pro

Fuji XT-1

Nikon D700

Fuji S2 Pro

Cherry on the cake

Phase One P25

Fuji S5 Pro

I wanted you to see all the Fuji "S" cameras in action although not against "the latest and the greatest" toys on the market. The Fujis look more natural and pleasing to me and I believe that is the case compared to the latest cameras too.

Thanks for adding these, Bob. Nothing beats looking at h2h comparisons.

DPR’s camera galleries often don’t have much value to me because they’ve decided to not shoot their galleries alongside a comparator camera. I once suggested to DPR that the S5 Pro would be the perfect h2h comparator for gallery work. As your examples show, the S5 Pro compares well against crop, FF, and MF cameras.

Once resolution is taken off the table, I think a lot of people would be shocked at how little image quality has actually improved (and, for some, perhaps even has declined).

Re: Fuji S5 Pro - is good for used 'till today times (like hobby)?

This is an interesting thread.  I had a Fuji S2 before getting a D200, which I used to do weddings.  Both those cameras are only good until about ISO 800.

I also had the S5 when the local store was blowing them out for less than half the regular detail price.  It was much slower than the D200 (2 fps down from 3 fps if using auto dynamic range vs 5fps), and the batteries weren't cheap (as they're slightly different from the Nikon ones.  The workaround here is to find the grip and use AAs.

12MP used to be good, but almost every Nikon made since about 2009 will beat it in almost every way.  JPGs from the J5 were good, but the best quality is from raw files -- the problem here is that those Fuji raw files are not so easy to convert,  especially with older software at that time.  I was much happier with my D300 and D300S, so soon sold the S5 and never looked back.

So, for hobby or occasional use, the S5 would do fine, with some caveats.

It's a great body, and I used it with satisfaction for several years to take some of my most cherished images:

However, it is somewhat resolution-challenged (I found that to be the case even back then, to some extent, but obviously more so today, given the competition), and so I'm not sure I'd recommend it today IF you intend to print large (beyond 30x45cm) OR you enjoy pixel-peeping.

Marco.

My S5Pro will come Grip, but I don't know if it will the AA magazine includes, too. If don't come I can buy in separately, after. It's good this accessory? How many shots by charge when use it with AA battery?

I had one D300 and I cound't be so happy with it, because of one massive and incorrigible dark shadows pressing his pictures when subexposes - even in minimal, type -3. Only when I used the D300s I understand 'cos the Nikon has released a second version in so short time: in her "new" these intensive and asphaltic blacks are dead and the shadows aren't stay so useless to recovered.

Yes! My S5 will be to hobby, and fun, only.

She arrived! Aesthetically not as severely shabby as it looked in the photos (note 7 or 8 I would say). It also came with an AF-D 1.8/85mm, a Grip, two batteries and a Canon strap

I'm glad you will have the grip, aas that accessory sometimes sells used for more than the camera!  (That's because it can still be used with the D200.)  I can't remember whether ot not the grip will work with the Nikon EN-EL3 (D200, D300, D700) battery, but I think maybe it does (other forum members, please verify).  If so, then it'll be easier to keep your camera going as there are many third- party Nikon options at a reasonable cost if your Fuji battery dies.

With AA batteries (if that insert is included), you'll get about half as many photos on a charge (less than 500), but the grip also allows for rechargeable NI-MH cells, keeping the cost down and allowing you to charge a second set of AA batteries or swap from your flash if you are desperate.  At least you're never without power.
