rubber part of camera grip getting sticky

something very odd not sure if anyone has noticed this but the rubbery part of camera is turning sticky. I use this camera mainly for time lapse shots and is in next to mint condition.

This is a very common issue - I've noticed it far more on Nikons than other cameras. it is very much dependant on what mix of goo is used to make the component. D100, D50, D70 and D70s have all had it. My D80 is so far OK.

Lens zoom and focus rings can also do it.

For example the mode dial on older Canons goes very tacky, but the grips don't seem to.

I clean this off with Isopropyl Alcohol. You need a lint free cloth, and it takes several goes to actually remove it. Try not to slop it around and ensure ventilation which doing it.

You'll get back to a slightly less grippy body but at least it won't be tacky.

In part this issue seems to be made worse by keeping camera in boxes or cupboards. I've had the same happen to my AA battery charger which has a 'rubbery' body.

Handgun tape?

As Robin says, assiduous cleaning with isopropanol will probably help but it is likely that the problem will recur.

One can buy over the Internet pukkah replacement rubber cladding specific to the camera (stick it on with double sided adhesive tape). I did my D90 that way. Some people advise using the rubber grip tape sold for handguns, see here:

This is a common issue on the D70.

Just wipe away the sticky rubber using a cloth and silicone oil. Did it on mine, worked like a charm.

Yes this can be an issue with many items. I think quite a few years ago the rubber that was being used was faulty. I've got quite a few different items with rubber that are now tacky, I'm very upset that a pair of Bose Headphones are now tacky, also a water head for a hose is also tacky. I'm going to try calling Bose to complain about the rubber not sure if they'll do anything but it really bothers me as they were very expensive headphones. Anyway that's my experience very upsetting.
