From what I remember reading, the Merrill sensor didn't play well with adapted lenses.
For some reason, the Quattro sensor doesn't have that issue (or it isn't as bad).
Also unsure how well either sensor type will work with a shorter flange distance and adapted lenses.
My SD1 coloration across the frame was TERRIBLE with M42 adapted lenses. My sd Quattro was so much better that I didn't notice it. But there was a very small amount of coloration across the image frame.
My SD15 was great with adapted lenses and I did not notice coloration across the frame.
I notice with my fp L + Sigma 45mm F2.8 DG DN lens that there is one color distortion setting I am not able to turn off: the camera says it is required due to the particular lens I have on it. So it seems that as the pixel count goes up, coloration across the frame becomes an issue regardless of sensor technology. Much of this is likely a consequence of the closer flange distance (20mm for L mount vs 44mm for SA mount).
I do have a third party L mount manual lens on order, and maybe it will show me a little coloration across the frame. The fp L has a setting to manually control coloration across the frame, and there are some fine adjustments in it. I might be able to correct it, even in third party manual lenses, if it becomes bothersome. This feature would be essential in a 1:1:1 full frame Foveon L mount camera I think.
A friend with a fp uses adapted lenses a lot (some wide angles as well) and has not complained about coloration, but the fp pixel density is less than in the fp L.
My guess is an APS-C size 1:1:1 Foveon sensor with maybe 5mp could do OK on L-mount with adapted lenses. Or even a sd Quattro sensor. Not a Merrill sensor though.
But, I've basically given up on a full frame Foveon. The fp L is doing fine when images are downsized, and I can shoot with it now, not some distant tomorrow.
