Are you fed up with the ever increasing cost of Canon gear?

It seems everything is increasing in price. OK if you bought 2 years ago and now selling but for the majority, like myself, I am puting off buying.

Canon can charge what they want in these scarce times and still make nice profits!

You gotta due what you feel is best for you.  I don't know too many people who are happy with increasing prices.

I was already stuck in a holding pattern for a while with the 7DM2 so when the R5/R6 hit the streets, with good AF, I had to go as I had the money sitting there.

My Grandfather told me years ago, “Back when I was your age, a loaf of bread cost a nickel!”

I said, “Grandpa, didn’t you tell me the other day that your first job paid 17 1/2 cents an hour?”

no, I am not fed up.

Some of the newer RF lenses offer good value to me. My R6 is worth what I paid for it every time I snap a pic of the fast moving grandkids.

My main hobby is amateur astronomy. Some of that equipment, especially the high quality optics and telescope structures, are also increasing in cost. One small business pointed out just the increased cost of wood recently, although that peaked and has come back down a bit.

If I can't afford something new, there are a ton of used options for Canon (and other brands) that offer great value. That said, the used prices have gone up as well. None of this occurs in a vacuum.

I do regret going with the RP due to lack of viable third party choices and the prices of canon's own lenses and if I could go back I'd just wait to go mirrorless or go with a different brand.

You think so? I use the R5 with some EF lenses (the Tamron 70-200/2.8, and the old EF nifty fifty). I don't feel like the lenses are hurt by using them on the adapter, and I still get the benefits of the R5 without any worse performance than the lenses would have on the old DSLRs. (Although the RP doesn't have it, having IBIS for the 50/1.8 is nice, too.) To me, one of the reasons I went with the R5 was because it'd have a good amount of RF lens support in the future, while still having access to the EF lens library. There are plenty of third-party lenses there.

As for third-party lenses already on RF natively, I'll admit these are few and far between. If you want AF on RF, your only option is Rokinon/Samyang. (The lenses currently sold as Rokinon were formerly sold as Samyang, but it's the same stuff anyway.) There are rumors that some of the big third-party names will jump on board soon, but that's not confirmed. Still, I expect it to happen at some point, especially with the R5/R6 reaching greater popularity than the R/RP ever did.

I understand that but with larger lenses/heavy e.g. my tamron 100-400 I don't feel comfortable with them on the adapter like they're going to break or something, there's just something about having that adapter that annoys me (it's stupid on my part really).

Considering the adapter was designed to accommodate the absolutely TREMENDOUS EF telephoto primes that Canon has (including this, the 1200/5.6, https://ymcinema.com/2021/06/09/the-worlds-longest-af-lens-is-for-sale-original-price-90000-meet-the-canon-ef-1200mm-f-5-6-l-usm/), I think you're fine. Your are not holding that heavy lens on the camera. You are holding that light camera on that heavy lens. If you're on a tripod, pretty much all of those heavy lenses have their own mounting points.

Yeah, it makes some visceral sense. I do think that the affordability of RF gear will increase over time, though, as it gains a greater foothold in the market and competition crops up from third-party manufacturers. Still, it's going to be expensive for now.

Volume market or quality market. I see volume market more as value for money more bang for bucks lenses and not necessarily top notch glass yet no slouch. People are divided on this and confuse these lower price lens as to be avoided like plague. For me a bit of software correction is ok.

Canon mirror less offers something for all. RF is fairly new mount and commands newly introduced products pricing. I am happy with the offering. I have 35, 50, and 85mm 1.8/2 for reasonable price. I got RP with 24-240 for a steal price. I got the 100-500 at premium price (still waiting for it's delivery). There is the premium option in 14 to 200 market from Canon. I adopted my EF lenses for these as I can wait for these to get market prices eventually. It will be a lot longer wait given shortages and disruption of supply chain. What is bugging you though? 😂

I am in no rush and happy with Canon. I am sticking to Canon. PS over time I learned to stick to Canon lenses and now I don't prefer to buy 3rd party lenses as much.

All I can say is the RF lenses are a big step up in price vs EF....

As an example I take RF70-200f4 vs EF70-200f4 mk2:

In my country the RF version is 900 USD !!!! more than the EF version that is ridiculous.

Re: Are you fed up with the ever increasing cost of Canon gear?

One thing is that the price of EF glass is rising too. Making the RF look better value.

When it's not.

I bought an R5 plus RF 100-500 early on, as this suited me best. I think the lens was £2600 and now it retails, if you can find it in stock, for over£3000.

Just can't help but think Canon is puting profits first.

(Also have the EF 400 DO II which is awesome on the R5, solid as a rock with the adapter, could only find a mint used one and a dealer said they won't be making more until December 2021 - I doubt that! Maybe 202?)

I'll accept natural disasters and  Covid have made a big difference to the way things should have gone, but that's life I suppose!

Canon - and other manufacturers - had long considered phot equipment costs to be unsustainably cheap even with sales levels where they were at the peak of the EF mount a few years ago. Very hard to  make significant price adjustments on existing systems, but they've taken advantage with a new mount. Thing is that they have left a level of accessibility in there with the RP, 35, 50 and 85mm non-L lenses, the 24-105 STM, and particularly the 600mm and 800mm f11 lenses, astonishingly cheap for their focal lengths. So the pro kit is selling for more like what they think it should sell at - similar real-world prices as to where FD L lenses were selling 30 years ago - and there are still cheaper options. The forthcoming 16mm looks like an absolute bargain.

Not at all, it is everything going up, not just cameras. That rumoured $/€/£700 100-400mm lens costs the same in real terms (pints of milk, loaves of bread) as my first additional lens did, a manual focus 28mm f/2.8.

Well, don't ever buy teleconverters then.

The RP is a light camera, and you might look at it as a heavy lens with someone on the end of it rather than vice versa. That sort of ergonomics is common with mirrorless and especially full frame.
