I haven't been using my N1 gear too much this summer while trying to bond with the Z50 but today I decided to take my 30-110 with diopter (my favorite macro setup) to shoot some bees in the yard and....aperture is broken. As costly as it may be, I am going to send my 10-30 and 30-110 to Huang and have him do his magic.

I'm sorry to hear about this failure. But it's good to know you are sending them off for repair. Since I figure I'll need to do this inn the future if one of my more expensive lenses go bad please keep me informed on how this goes for you. I've never sent anything outside the US and am curious what the process is and how much of a hassle you encounter.

What are you left with in the meantime? I think you now have a 10-100 non PD that covers that range, and perhaps a good diopter to use with it.

I was about to offer you the loan of an extra 30-110 sitting here idle, but thought I'd better check it first only to discover that it too now has a bad aperture! So, that's two bad 30-110's I've got. Too bad we can't send your two plus my two in a single package for repair to split the international shipping cost.

I'm not too bummed; I've prepared myself for this moment!

Oh, I have a good 10-100 non PD that works just about as well for the macro as well as FT-1 with either DX 55-200 VRII or DX 70-300 VR, so no lack of tools here. Its just that the 30-110 is so compact and light. I've been trying to use the Z50 for macro but I'm just not as happy with the results.

I’ll send mine to you, you’re about 350 miles closer!

The thread in the link below has the costs for repair in one of the replies. The cheaper lenses are only worth repairing if you intend to keep them as you can get used ones for about the same price, but they wouldn’t have the metal gear and may fail at any time.

Shame about that ( and expensive ) however once you get them repaired you should be set up for the long term.

Even with the repair, I think these are cheap lenses for what they can do.

I have a suspicion that they are more inclined to fail with the aperture problem if you don’t use them- that’s what happened to my two 10-100’s - now both repaired and working well.

Good luck

Richard

That's my suspicion as well. Both failed 30-110's for me were lenses I wasn't using. I now try to cycle through my duplicate lenses so none of them sit idle for long periods.

Good idea! I enjoy being able to use my 30-110 again after the DIY repair I did using one of Mr. Huang’s brass gears. The extra cost of having a repair tech doing it will be worth it IMO. You should get back a much more reliable lens than if an authorized repair was done. (If one can be done at all.)

Sorry to hear that, Paul.  Definitely please keep us informed on how it turns out; since likely a few of us would be sending our lenses to Mr. Huang; not matter of if but when.

Re: Another failed lens 2

A well used lens may have a broken flat flex cable too, beside the broken gear.

It's a pain in the neck to fix the 10-30 VR without touching the adjustment from the factory.

Cheers.

Sorry for you, Paul. Mine (bought new) didn't last long either. It failed quickly, and went directly to the trash can, since repair prices here in France are outrageous.

I have the 10-100 non PD which replaces it, and works fine. Fingers crossed...

I have had two 30-110s fail a 10-30 and a 10. The recent failed 10-30 and 30-110 are white and go with my white V1 and J1 so I am getting them repaired for my collection as well as future use. My 10-100 takes the place of both of course but I have no idea how long that will last either. I figure the lenses repaired with new metal gears will be around as long as I need them so its worth the cost to me.

Hi,  Paul.

When you ship out the lenses also send email with tracking number for me.

Re: Another failed lens 2

I have read so much about failed lenses over the years, particularly the 10-30 and the 30-110. It made me wonder what percentage of these lenses do NOT have any problems, we will probably never know but an interesting thought.
