Thanks for the link.

Again, I think the image quality is very good for such a lens.  Cant wait to order one.

The full size photo samples look sharp and great.  These are sooc jpgs.  So its great for jpg shooters and even better for raw shooters.

Mine is expected to arrive in the next week or so.

Curious how it compares to the Sony 18-200

With the A77 I used the Tamron 18-270 quite intensely. After some years the rubber of the zoom ring started to loosen and had to be replaced. After using it for 6+ years this happened again and there were slight problems with the AF motor. I bought a second hand lens while looking for a replacement system.

With the A6400 I also bought a SEL18200LE. There already was a Tamron alternative but my previous experience combined with the fact that the Sony lens was supported by the camera for automatic compensation of distortion, vignetting and so on drove met to the Sony lens.

Both the Tamron 18-300 and the SEL18200LE have similar aperture ranges and the difference at the tele end is not that much for my use cases. Still it would be nice to see a comparison between these lenses.

Re: Curious how it compares to the Sony 18-200

It is kind of a weird thing. But with my Tamron 18-200. In camera distortion and vignetting is supported on my NEX7 and A6000. I think that came about because way back then. Sony had not come out with the LE 18-200 yet.   They did have the SEL which I also have but it was big and expensive. Sony had partial ownership of Tamron. And it was still a question if E mount was going to survive so it seemed they worked a special cooperation for that one lens. I don’t think any other Tamron lenses got the corrections supported like that.

I didn't know that. Just looked it up and it turns out that in 2008 Sony had 11.1% of Tamron shares and this year it was 15.88% . According to https://www.tamron.com/ir/stockbond/stockbond_04.html it looks like they are the largest shareholder.

I don’t think any other Tamron lenses got the corrections supported like that.

It would be nice if more lenses are supported for corrections. It's now perhaps an advantage for Sony lenses that they are supported with automatic in camera corrections. Maybe it would also cost too much space in the firmware. Alternatively it would also be nice if users could add a few correction profiles themselves.

Looks like I'm not the only Tamron 18-200 user out there. Makes me wonder 2 things:
1. why it became a forgotten lens

and

2. why Tamron crowded into 18-200 back (partly answers #1) then instead of releasing 18-300, back then

I can only speak for myself when I bought the SEL18200LE. The A6400 lists supported lenses for in camera correction. And that list only contains Sony lenses. Currently the Sony 18-200 LE is even cheaper than the Tamron and the silver Sony 18-200 is about €30 more expensive than the Tamron. If you can buy a Sony lens (with Tamron's history of broken AF motors) that is supported for correction for approximately the same price as the Tamron then the choice is easy.

Perhaps they could offer their 18-200 back then for a much lower price than the Sony lens? I'm not sure which lenses were available for Canon and Nikon back then but they had a lens design for the 18-200 which they could use for more than one version. It was perhaps relatively cheap in terms of development costs to offer it also for Sony cameras?

Re: Curious how it compares to the Sony 18-200

Makes sense that they could easily adapt existing lenses to a new mount. I see there were/are old 18-270, 18-300 options for Canikon that were only $200. Perhaps they wanted to ride the marketing of SEL18200.

In the US, the SEL18200LE is $750 currently from major retailers while Tamron is $600. Original SEL18200 is $800.

I got the Tamron 18-200 for ~$450 shortly after it came out albeit gray market and it was tougher to find gray market Sony's. So for me at the time, $450 vs $750/$800 was a no-brainer non-decision. I can see how a $150 regular retail difference would attract a lot fewer buyers.

In the Netherlands the prices are currently:

  • SEL18200LE : €609 (plus a cashback from Sony of €50)
  • SEL18200 : €678.99
  • Tamron 18-200 Diii : €649

The 18-300 is now listed at €749 (checked it with two major photography retailers)

Re: Tamron 18-300 for E-mount

Yes, I read this one:

https://petapixel.com/2021/10/22/tamron-18-300mm-f-3-5-6-3-review-this-cant-possibly-be-good-can-it/

Neither overly positive, or let's say of course you cannot expect miracles by such a lens. I have taken out my 18-135 last weekend again and was surprised how well it holds up against the (still superior) 16-55. I think I am just too spoiled by those lenses and expect the 18-135 staying with me as super-but-not-so-super-zoom.
