Shooting Junior roller derby. 135 f2 or Tam 70-200 on 5D4

Just got my 5D4 on Friday and 7D2 was my prime sports body, but I am going to break in my 5D4 as a new sports prime with the 7D2 as the backup

I planned on the Tamron 70-200 2.8 G2  as my goto , but after watching a few vids, I am seeing folks like the135 F2 for indoor sports due to it's faster focus.

I could always put the 70-200 on the 7D2 or should I use the 24-70 G2 on it for the group and wider shots?

Has anyone shot indoor sports with the 135  on the 5D4 or any Canon FF.?

I have never used the Tamron lens you mentioned so I can't directly compare the two. I have used the 135 for indoor sports on a few occasions, not on full frame though. If the 135 focal length works for what your doing then I think you will be pleased with it. In my experience the autofocus is great, photo quality even wide open is great also. It is a superb lens for many applications and sports is one of them.

I've only shot roller derby once, and it was with a 70-200 on a 7D. The zoom was nice, I must admit. The action can vary from quite close to kind of far. In saying that, if 135mm was the only focal length you had, I'm sure you could get creative with your cropping, both in camera and in post prod.

I remember shooting roller hockey with an 85 1.8 when that was all I had and got some cool shots. I guess what I'm saying is that either way, you will get good results.

The zoom may be a bit more versatile overall, but the 135 has a great reputation for image quality and focus speed/accuracy. Sorry, that is a real fence sitter answer. I guess it comes down to what you value most.

If carrying 2 bodies is okay I would put the 70-200 Tamron on one (probably the 7D2) and the 135 in the other (the 5D4).

That's exactly what I did. Also both at case 4. Bringing one Speedlite and a Godox ad200 . They are using the local skating rink so the lighting will tax my 7d2 a little,

This is my first time with the 5d4. Just got it two weeks ago. I have practiced shooting downtown traffic at rush hour and I am blessed with the tracking.

How many shots can you frame each time the racers go by?

It varies. I have never shot the juniors, but on the adult ladies, I would follow the action and get 3 to 4 during each lap.

so maybe 10 for each jam and a few in between jams of player interaction, Zebra's, NSO's and the crowd.

Rarely use High FPS. I do on occasion use low continuous.  I usually get photos edited and off to the after party to get the pats on the back.

Too  many shots and I miss out on the after. . Also I get my best clients while striking when the iron is hot.

I have mentioned this before, I believe.  Others shooting the 300-1000 shots do well, but never make it to the party and even though I might have missed shots from not shooting at 10 FPS, the players like what I have and order at the party. Works for me. A photo in the hand is worth five still in the PC or camera.
