Heartrending time of life

Dear All,

Well, after many years, countless photos and a lot of adventures I find myself doing something I really need to do - but am doing so with a heavy heart.

Hoping this is the right place to discuss it - thought it would be a good starting point.

I've moved systems (Sony) and am looking to finance some eye-wateringly expensive lenses. To keep my marriage viable I'm going to try to do this by selling my Sigma camera gear. To be honest I'm just not using it so hopefully someone else can.

Specifically, three flashes, two bodies (SD15 and SD1 Merrill), crapload (7 definite, 3 maybe) lenses, two teleconverters, 9 batteries, two chargers plus other bits and pieces.

My questions are

1) where is the best place to do this - I sold some gear many years ago via ebay and had a nightmare with one guy who seemed to think an SD15 was supposed to be the equivalent of a Canon 1DX Mk2 in low light. When it wasn't he demanded a refund claiming the camera was defective. He sent my SD15 back. I tested the returned camera and it was as good as it ever was but .... he was basically a PITA so happily refunded just to be rid of the experience ...... it left a nasty taste so I'm looking for other ways to sell.
2) what is a fair price for second hand Sigma gear presently ?

and finally

3) if there's anyone interested here - happy to discuss.

I'm in QLD (Brisbane, Australia) so if someone local wants to come have a look and play I'd be more than happy to provide the coffee and a back yard to test it in :-).

Thanks in Advance,

Regards,

Mark

P.S. I can list all the gear if it's appropriate in this forum - or anywhere else suggested that's appropriate.

Hiya Mark.

I'm in Melbourne and might be interested in one or two of your Sigma items. Send me a PM and let me know what you have to sell.

As for selling Sigma gear. I have sold a Sigma body on eBay and didn't have any issues, although I did have trouble with a Canon lens that was in perfect nick.

You might try listing your gear here on the For Sale and Wanted forum. I haven't used it, so can't say how successful it would be but I believe some have been quite happy buying and selling there. Worth a try.

As to cameras and lenses, is your profile Gear List accurate?

My questions are

1) <>
2) what is a fair price for second hand Sigma gear presently ?

I go onto eBay and, for a particular item search, set it to show only sold and completed listings. I put the ones close to my condition into my calculator, over ten items if possible. I suppose a spreadsheet would be better if you have the time.

Then I use the Statistics function to calculate the Mean sold price and the Standard Deviation (Sd). Based on those, I determine my price - I either use the Mean or I apply a discount to speed/ensure a Sale.

For example, there are eight Quattro Hs currently listed as sold (I checked the 'Used' box) on US eBay. One of them was about half the price of the other seven, so I did not count it.

My calculator said the Mean was $1237 and the Sd was $162. That is the current eBay market value of an H.

[edit] I looked at the half-price one and it looked genuine enough - a gentleman like yourself having to sell ... [/edit]

Offering one at -2Sd would be $913 and stand a very good chance of selling. Offering at -1Sd would be good enough, I reckon. Offering at Mean or above, one could be waiting a while ...

There are also five used sd Quattros, Mean $550, Sd about $150 (accounting for the low sample size.)

Hi,

My gear list is not complete (missing a couple of lenses and sundries) so I’ll put up a definitive list.

there’s also some ancillary gear (3x sigma flashes etc). Umming and aaaahing on selling a couple on the gear list as well. Again, I’ll have that firm ASAP. Both bodies are definite.

I like your methodology for calculating based on market. I’ll probably be on the cheaper end for fast sale as the lens I’m financing with the sale is hopefully for first use on a trek (pandemic willing) to central Australia . …… just need NT and QLD to not go into lockdown for the next month !

(fingers crossed)

I have to admit - selling cameras and lenses feels like pawning family members ….. I should probably anthropomorphise less :-/

watch this space !

cheers….

Occasionally I've sold off the great majority of my Sigma gear, down to just one camera as we speak - but I don't get that feeling much, if ever.

Now that you've flagged your intentions - and your woes - list it in the For Sale and Wanted forum like you're supposed to do on DPR. That is where I secured a lens recently. I would look forward to seeing what you've got.

As for price, why not start with some reasonably-arrived-at fraction of the purchase price that would attract some genuine Sigma types. IMO, your experience in that other marketplace points to its riskiness. You should be looking to sell within Oz, as getting stuff abroad would be fraught in the present climate. - Either it would incur delays, or would significantly cause you to revise your asking price.

You know you can use Sigma SA mount lenses on Sony's new mirrorless cameras, using the Sigma MC-11 adapter, right?

That's what I plan to do. I shoot with manual focus a lot, so I figure SA mount lenses are a great value. Plus, I can use them on L mount cameras too, using the other MC-11 adapter . . . when the time comes.

Yep,
I have an MC-11 and have been testing it out. Works well for landscape and portrait but for anything requiring blisteringly fast AF ..... (sigh!). Plus the SD1, SD15 and flashes would be lot better being used by someone than gathering dust in my gear storage.....
Cheers....
