got new canon R but having trouble with getting files off camera

Hi All,

I went out with my Canon R today and shot a few frames.  I have come back and lugged the camera in via USB.  When I go to the windows file manager, the camera is not shown.  I have tried all manner of disconnecting, rebooting etc, but it isn't showing up EXCEPT on one occasion when it showed up but said there were no files on the camera.  There are definitely files on the cam, I can cycle thru them.  Is this a known  issue with the R?

On my 5D i just click on the cam in file manager and 100% of the time it takes me to the files......

Anyone had this issue?  Am I meant to use the EOS utility to get the files off the camera?

I dont want to do that frankly.  Any ideas?

A few things that might help debug the problem:

  1. Is this a PC or a Mac?
  2. Did you turn the camera on after connecting the USB cable and do you see the computer symbol on the back display? The camera must be ON to connect to the computer.
  3. Did the computer ding or display an acknowledgment of something connecting to the USB port?
  4. Are you using USB C to USB C or USB A to USB C cable? Both should work but it might help in the debugging. If C to C and the PC has PD, then the green light of charging should come on when the camera power is off.

Thanks for your response. Yes, it is a windows machine.  The usb lead is working as the rear screen of the camera has the computer icon on it.

I just went back to the file manager and it was recognising the camera.  I clicked on it and drilled down and it brings up the message "folder is empty".

hmmm.  There are definitely images on the card. I can scroll through them on the LCD screen of the camera.  This is odd.  I might do the obvious thing and reboot the computer/ camera and see what happens.

Simple solution:  use a card reader.  It requires no special driver, will be recognized immediately, the transfer will be faster, don't need to tether the camera to the computer, and it won't use the camera batteries.  I've been using card readers for over 20 years and by far it is the easiest way.

Could be your USB socket on your PC is faulty, have you tried another socket? My windows PC has an SD card slot which is much less faff than plugging in leads and switching the camera on, call me lazy or what!🙂

Hi All,

Thanks for all the suggestions.  Luckily I didn't have too much trouble in the end.

I did what I probably should have done initially which was to simply reboot the computer!
