250D still photo problem after drenching
1

Hi all,

A few days ago I got caught in a thunderstorm, got completely drenched and so did the camera (EOS 250D plus EFS 18-55mm kit lens).

Initially the camera was totally dead but gradually came back to life over a period of around 36 hours after a spell in a sealed bag with rice.

Now it’s mostly functional. The viewfinder and main display work fine, I can view old photos and auto-focus is OK.

However, taking still photos produces incredibly noisy images with incorrect colours and a horizontal Venetian blind effect when zooming in to the image.

Oddly, if I record videos they are completely fine. Colours are correct and the image quality as expected.

I’ve checked with various length exposures with the lens removed and the mirror seems to be moving perfectly.

I’m at a complete loss how I’m getting such a difference in results between stills and videos using the same sensor.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear that.  I live in Oregon where the rainfall can be excessive during the winter months.  As a result, I always carry small umbrellas with me and keep them in my camera bags even during the dry summer months.  Water can destroy a camera.  But we often don't have a lot of wind with our rainstorms, so an umbrella may not work for you when windy conditions happens.  Maybe next time you can bring a sealed plastic bag with you, if you think there might be thunderstorms.

I would guess that you would have to take the camera to a repair shop or look for a used one as a replacement.

It’s probably the shutter blades. Probably worth getting a quote on a repair or just buy another camera.

Did you remove the lens when putting it in the rice?  You probably did but I figure it is worth mentioning.  Also, I have to mention to not let rice get inside the camera body!
