Wireless mic directly to cameras wifi? why only airpods?

During vlogging it would have been great if I could wirelessly send my narration directly to the camera, without some kind of wireless dongle connected to the mic input of the camera.

One of my cameras seems to have this, my Insta360 R 1-inch Edition can connect to airpods, but seemingly nothing else.

1) Do you think there's a technical reason why only airpods? I don't understand why my wireless bose headset can't be connected.

2) There's nothing like this supported on my other cameras (Sony A7C and RX100), correct?

3) Do you think in the near future this technology will start appearing in cameras? I'll probably upgrade my action-cameras quite often so I'm hoping this technology beyond airpods will be avail in my next action camera next year.

I think you mean Bluetooth.

There's no technical limitation I know of that prevents cameras from directly supporting Bluetooth microphones.

BLE4.0

The camera supports the Bluetooth Low Energy 4.0 standard, while the AirPods support Bluetooth 5.0. Perhaps your other speakers use an older, unsupported standard?

Also, the AirPods have a powerful radio and can be located up to 100 meters from a device, while typical Bluetooth speakers are limited to 10 meters.

Let's see, my Bose 700 has:

  • Bluetooth range: Up to 10 m (33 ft)
  • Bluetooth version: 5.0 (including all headphone profiles)
  • Codec SBC and AAC

So they do have BT5, but only 10m.

I should note that it's not that the Insta360 fails to connect to my headphones, but that the Insta360 specifically is ONLY airpod supported, the menu doesn't say "connect to headset" but specifically "connect to airpods".

So I guess this either mean that they decided the camera needs the "powerful 100m radio". Or I guess more likely there's other reasons (Apple paying them for exclusive support).

So unfortunate!

I have no personal experience with this, but some users have reported various levels of compatibility with other brands:

Oh wow, thanks.. the menu clearly states to 'connect to Airpods' so it never occured to me to just try any Bluetooth headset, but I just tried my Bose 700 and they connected just fine!

The quality is quite bad, which is to be expected as the headset mic is by the ears so they're far away from the mouth, however perhaps if I buy a BT Lapel mic (if those exists) and hope that that one connects too, then I would have the ultimate vlogging setup!
