ND and other filters for zoom lenses

Hi,

I am asking for any recommendations for ND filters and other accessories for the RF Zoom set (15-35mm,24-70mm,80-200).

I have been using them with a C70 with built in ND's. I picked up an R5 and now need some filters so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Moment Variable ND. This was shot using the R5 and a lens with this filter.

You might get some better advice if you give some more information about your price range and use case.

One thing to note is that the RF15-35 and RF24-70 both have 82mm filter threads but the RF70-200 has only 77mm filter threads (it seems "unhelpful" as they could have easily made it also be 82mm). The 70-200mm hood has a door for controlling a polarizing filter (circular or adjustable neutral density). You can fit a 77 to 82 mm filter adapter onto the RF70-200 with the lens hood in place, but you will not be able to remove the hood without first removing the filter adapter and filter. Probably OK for occasional use, but would be a pain for regular use.

Re: ND and other filters for zoom lenses

thank you for the info. I will probably just invest in a couple of the basic 77mm to match the other 2 lens instead of the adapters. I have never had a good experience with filter adapts.

I am just looking for daytime direct sunlight shooting. I don't plan on any long exposure or anything requiring huge stops. Budget is negotiable depending on the quality but I do not plan on spending over 300-500 for a kit or a set of 3-4 densities.

If you don't mind buying double filters and carrying them around, it is the way to go. The biggest pain can be separating the filter from the adapter.

Jarad shows and discusses the issue with the 77 to 82mm in his early review of the 70-200f2.8. (https://youtu.be/pEYYW-VQwj4?t=536).

I don't use polarizing filters or NDs that often and would not like to carry two sets. So I think I will gut it out with the adapter. Once you mate the filter to the adapter ring, it is not that hard. The trick is to point the lens sideways and slightly down and bring the filter in from the side. You don't want to point the lens up and drop the filter down. It sounds bad but it seems to be pretty easy as there is room around the filter and with the hood's door. Of course, the easy option is to not use the hood but I like having the protection.

Are you wanting circular polarizing and/or variable ND filters or just straight-up NDs?  My main reason for the 77 to 82 ring is for the circular polarizing filter.
