X1iii, Mi11U, S21U & iP12 shootout at 70, 120 & 240mm!

In researching the zoom quality of the Sony Xperia 1 III, I found this YouTube video made by a Hong Kong phone reviewer that compares the Xperia 1 III (X1iii), Mi 11 Ultra (Mi11U), S21 Ultra (S21U) and iPhone 12 (iP12), including their zoom quality at 70, 120 and 240mm (3x, 5x and 10x):

70mm (3x), cropped. The reviewer actually talked about differences in color and white balance. I think the Mi 11 Ultra is the sharpest in this case.

Another 70mm (3x), cropped. The reviewer thinks the four shots have similar IQ, but I find the Mi 11 Ultra is the sharpest again.

120mm (5x), cropped. The reviewer thinks the Xperia 1 III and Mi 11 Ultra shots are sharper than the other two as the former have dedicated lenses at 105mm and 120mm. I find the Mi 11 Ultra to be the sharpest of the four shots.

240mm (10x), cropped. The reviewer thinks the S21 Ultra is the sharpest in this case as it as a dedicated 240mm lens, which I agree with.

240mm (10x), another crop. The reviewer thinks the S21 Ultra is the sharpest in this case as it as a dedicated 240mm lens, which I agree with.

So my conclusion is that the Mi 11 Ultra is the sharpest of the four phones at 70mm (3x) and 120mm (5x), while the S21 Ultra is the sharpest at 240mm (10x) and beyond.

I think it also has the hardware advantage. At 240 mm the Samsung can use the sensor in binned mode. The Xiaomi does have the resolution for the 240 mm in croped mode, but its unbined, making the sensor pixel size very small at 0.8 qm.

I don't quite understand. Did you mean the S21U can bin its 108MP main camera to 12MP to assist the 10MP 240mm camera, and the Mi11U's main camera has a 50MP unbinnable sensor, which can't help much with its 120mm camera's 48MP (binnable) sensor whose pixel size is 0.8µm?

Sorry about my explanation.

The Samsung at 240 mm is 10 MP with 1.22 qm. Where the Xiaomi, at 120 mm has a 48 MP sensor that is only 0.8 qm when it's not binned. So it has the resolution available when cropping, but with small sensor pixels.

If you compare at 3x (70-75nm)

The Xiaomi's main sensor has 50mp available with 1.4qm unbined. It's outputting 12mp images when shooting. So it should have enough resolution for digital zooming.

The Samsung is 10mp 1.22qm. so it has smaller sensor pixels and less resolution.

I think that Huawei is using the same approach with the new p50 pro and 3.5 X zoom using a 64 MP sensor.

But DxOMark says the P50 Pro's tele camera sensor is "64 MP sensor (16 MP output)". So it has a small pixel size in bright light and not enough resolution in low light, right?

Maybe. I don't know exactly how the digital zooming works.

It seems that the pixel size is 0.7 qm in unbined mode. Witch might be a challenge in low light

S21U mischaracterized at 70mm

The two 70mm comparisons above actually misrepresented the S21U. The S21U has a 72mm camera, so at 70mm it actually uses a crop from its 24mm camera, resulting in suboptimal IQ. The video claims the S21U's 70mm shots were taken with a native 70mm camera, which is wrong and should be "Crop from 24mm".

120mm (5x), cropped. The reviewer thinks the Xperia 1 III and Mi 11 Ultra shots are sharper than the other two as the former have dedicated lenses at 105mm and 120mm. I find the Mi 11 Ultra to be the sharpest of the four shots.
