SD1M card errors.

Began downloading images to my PC, at #27 message the file is corrupted. Retry and the message changes to card corrupted via the SD1M rear screen. Third try a Card Error message on the SD1M. Is there a route out of this or do I need a new SD-card? I have tried removal and re-insertion.

Hi DS,

My next step would be to format the card in-camera while not connected to the computer.

If that does not work, connect the card to the computer with a card reader and use the Operating System's trouble-shooting abilities, e.g.

Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Admistrative Tools>Windows Memory Diagnostic  (Windoze 7).

Re: SD1M card errors.

I am trying to retrieve the photos not downloaded. SPP will show me the usual thumbnails for #1-26 but Irfanview, whch can open files SPP claims are corrupted, will display data but no image at frame #1. I have tried a different SD card since the initial post. It formats.

I would put the card in a card reader and run a file recovery program. The one I have on my computer is called Recuva, and I no doubt installed it because it was recommended, but I've not had to use it yet.

Once Recuva has done its work (if it does), then you can format the card in the camera.

You can also try formatting and using a fresh card, to make sure the camera isn't at fault.

OK, sorry.

@ArvoJ has some utilities but not sure if they work post SD14. One I believe can "fix" corrupted X3Fs.

FastStone Viewer can be set to extract the JPEG instead of attempting conversion.

Can the bad file be transferred to your computer by means other than SPP/camera, e.g. a card reader, and posted somewhere for examination by others?

Your best chance is to put the card in a Card Reader & use some image rescue software to get whatever you can off the card. I have used Image Rescue 5, Rescue Pro De Luxe & Recuva with some success on cards like yours.

If the images are important do not take any further shots with that card and do not format it either in the camera or on your computer until after you get your images off it with some rescue software.

After that I would do a deep format on the computer & then format in the camera & hopefully all will be good again. If in any doubt though get a new card.

Could you try a different adapter? Maybe it's your CF to SD card adapter that is the problem.

I have tried removal and re-insertion.

Re: SD1M card errors.

Of course the SD1M uses CF cards...

I have activated my portable data bank. It recognises a CF card inserted and that is all. It gives no indication of file transfer numbers or transfer.

Re: SD1M card errors.

Irfanview now on v4.58. Installed that and the plug-ins and it no longer recognises X3F files.

The CF card problem is fatal. Annoying as the 70 files on the card were meant to be the backbone of a series, instead I have Part 1 and two other parts missing.

Not knowing what your portable data bank is, I am assuming that you don't have a CF card reader, e.g. a Kingston?

With a CF plugged into my Kingston, I can get to here in Win 7's Control Panel:

I think "SD-card" was a typo, Scott.

Have you installed a file recovery program yet ?

If you set up a directory on your hard drive, such a program should be able to find the files on a dud card and transfer them to it.

But we don't know what your "portable data bank" is.  Is it a card reader connected to your computer ?

Re: SD1M card errors.

Take Ted's advice and try Faststone.  Easy to use/learn/understand....I never got enamored with IrfanView.

Re: SD1M card errors.

Reinserted the original failed CF card into the SD1M, recognised as faulty. Formatted the card and it is recognised, accepts image files and will transfer to pc.

Irfanview will recognise transferred files as X3F but X3F no longer features in it's recognised file types, possible previously with the plug-in activated. Is Faststone an alternative?

This failure occurred with no prior warning from the SD1M.

Thanks for the recovery software suggestions, if it happens again I will look into it.

Well, one doesn't want to lose a load of photos. That's why I installed that program, knowing that card failures do happen occasionally and at bad times.

I think it's usually just a little glitch that corrupts the directory structure.

I am now a Faststone person. Irfanview a receding memory.

File recovery now on my radar.

I have deleted Irfanview as X3F is not in it's recognised list. Faststone already installed and in use.

Be aware that FastStone only successfully extracts the full-size embedded JPEG for Sigma Cameras later than DP1/SD14. If you set it to convert raws, you get a low-contrast bluish image for those cameras.

For DP1/SD14 it works either way. For SD9/SD10 it can only convert the raws, it will not show the 1/4-size embedded JPEG.

FastStone uses DCraw for raw conversion.

Good to hear that Faststone is working for you, but why delete Irfanview ? It's an immensely useful program.

Response for Ted and Don

I used Irfanview as I could use Slideshow to go through images speedily to pick those for further edit in other software. Unless I am in error I cannot find X3F in the files recognised list in v4.48 (I think it is) even with the plug-in installed.

Faststone has a slideshow capability and that is all I need.

My next check will be to take the SD1M outside and shoot 40+ random frames for download. It will (a) test the card and (b) prove to myself that I am better than random chance at producing photographs.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions. I have noted the file recovery software.
