Terry Richardson style with Sigma cameras

Hey guys, I was thinking, because I just got these new Art lenses, I should shoot a series in Terry Richardson style. What do you think? I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Hi Again Scott

Ok, so I looked up this guy and I see he has been ban from a few publications so you may want to modify his/your style unless you want to be view as a perv and get ban yourself. It might be hard to find really good models if you get a reputation like that. But it's up to you, I sure the SDQ-H is up to the task.

Good Luck

He did not get banned from some publications because he is regarded as being a "perv" (*) but because in the wake of the "MeToo" movement there have been accusations of sexual abuse by several of his models against him. He claims that all these contacts have been consensual and so far there have been no court cases or convictions yet (as far as I know), so legally he is an innocent citizen (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Richardson )

To sum it up: He was is not banned for his photography but because of possible misconduct against his models. His photographic and cinematographic style is still highly regarded.

Regarding the original question: Personally I would rather do my own thing than imitate other person's styles, but I much prefer his way to do portraits over that of most other photographers. Especially those "soft" and "pretty" portraits that one gets shown most of the time are not worth being taken in the first place in my opinion.

Regards

Max

(*) If you look at the history of art (every kind of art, not just photography) a vast majority of the most highly regarded artists were considered "perv" at one time or the other by their contemporaries. Therefore artits must never listen to what the ignorant crowds have to say about them

Interesting.

It just seems to me that the Sigma cameras can do a raw look pretty well, and since most of the time the lighting is controlled, I figure I don't need a lot of dynamic range. I also figured maybe the Sigma camera would give a slightly different look to what my Nikon D810 would give. I'm not into the point-and-shoot thing, like that guy, but I could get a DP2 Merrill and try it, I guess. That would fill a gap in my kit, now that I have a 50mm f1.4 Art. Eventually I want to get a wider lens too, but it will be the 40mm f1.4 Art, and the DP2 Merrill has a 30mm, which is equivalent to an Art prime, so it would still be useful for the wider stuff.

As far as the perv thing goes . . . that doesn't really matter to me. Plenty of people out there are pervs, and it's not like the guy wasn't pretty much up front about the fact that he was a wild sex feind. He didn't try to keep it a secret or anything. Since the 90's there have been articles about the guy shooting naked. Who shoots naked?!?

All the way back in 2014 there was this: https://jezebel.com/another-model-comes-forward-with-horrible-terry-richard-1540412871

Why would people still shoot with the guy, if that didn't make them steer clear of him?

He shot Kate Moss for Harper's Bazaar way back in 1997 (and he got naked at that shoot, if I remember correctly), and he has shot her a dozen times since then. He posted what looks like a 1970's porn photo of himself right at the turn of the century a few years later. If that didn't make people wary of shooting with him, I don't know what would. Kate Moss even had him shoot her wedding, so obviously the guy can't have been all that bad, even though he was naked when shooting her for Harper's Bazaar, right? Well, that's the way it seems to me. He also recently directed Miley Cirus's Wrecking Ball video. (I don't know if he got naked.) Obviously young Miley liked him enough to hire him, even though he'd been acting "like a perv" for more than ten years before that. She has shot with him again since then. Maybe it's the controversiality of the guy that makes people want him to shoot for them. Maybe it's just his style of shooting. Either way, who cares why they want him?

At my age, I tend not to like sensationalist styles depicting human-kind.

I do like Scott's "fairies in the forest" series which shows that he is quite capable of developing his own style.

Our personal style (if we have one) is often based on styles of others, known or unknown, as well as our own views. So it is that Scott could incorporate elements of Richardson at will, without necessarily adopting Richardson's style in it's entirety.

Apart from the guy's extreme behavior, is there anything special in his style other than plenty of studio flash gear and everything in sharp focus ?

Is there a well equipped studio that you can rent by the day ?

Scott you want to photograph in the nude?

Well if you want to go photographing in the nude, thats your business.  But try not to do it out in general public,  like a kids park. You just might get into trouble.

A nude beach may or may not be ok. I've never been and don't know the rules on photography.

I have a pair of powerful studio strobes already. I have a fast studio strobe too. I figure the only other thing I might need is a white backdrop, and I can get a 9' roll of white paper for that easy enough.

Or . . .

I guess I could get a bigger one like this:

I've always wanted a really big, long, wide one. I figure it would let me do more with models.

Terry Richardson was being called out for borderline sexual assault well before the #metoo sensation diluted the credibility of such allegations.

There were plenty of tutorials for the direct flash, naïve, retro/Polaroid/Supreme style a few years ago. I think the GR came up as a favourite.

A more interesting photographer who sometimes touches on this style, though has more range and less controversy would be @cammackey. He shares bts footage and commentary.

Also see Nick Knight’s ShowSTUDIO.
