Feel free to say anything about my photos and compositions

These are some photos, I have taken with Lumix G7 and 14-42mm kit lens. Can you share your views on these photos? Also some tips for improving my photos.

Number 3 may improve with a reduction in the orangey  colour in the background, either through a variation in the composition when taking the photograph or in PP.  IT is somewhat distracting and pulls the eye away from the primary object (the flower)

second photo from top is pretty nice

the others not so much

when you take photos of flowers they should be back lit and glowing or they will look really bad ....and don't take a photo of the back of the flower

This is an over generalisation  for sure and if you present a series where ALL flowers are shot that would make for a very boring series

Yes if you work on a series , one should have some shots backlit but this is not a 100% rule contrary to what you wrote

Re: Feel free to say anything about my photos and compositions

For the chrysanthemum shot, I might increase exposure by 1/3~1 ev for a more vibrant output.

I am on my phone and the flower looks flat and dull to my eye. Lack of some pop feeling.

As the background was not very bright (chance to overblown is low) and had no important detail there (might loss small even if slightly overblown), higher exposure might benefit the shot IMHO. YMMV.

The others are o.k.

Liked  1 most, though a bit dull light as others have pointed out.

need a bit of life, so to speak.

a quick example with some contrast playing,

I like the comp, bokeh, and flower pose

nr 2 would need some of the same PP like the nr 1 flower. I like the comp on that one too.

nr 3 have too busy background, and is too centered, to make it interesting.

nr 4 subjekt and background to alike  to make an interesting photo.

these are just my views, so just take them for what they are - internet opinions what matters  are your opinions.

I think these are all quite nice photos and that they are MUCH BETTER than anything I ever did when I first picked up a camera.

Personally, I think if you want to take your shots to the next level, you should start paying attention to / working with lighting of the photos.

Someone mentioned backlighting above, which can be nice. But you should also try to look for any flowers where there is a significant difference between the light falling on the flower and the light falling on the background. That will make your flowers stand out.

Another thought is that you can buy some inexpensive macro tubes that support AF and get even closer to your subject. (Note that is it a bit difficult sometimes to use macro-tubes because of the very limited area that will be in focus).

These are on sale for $13 in the US right now. I have a set on my Sony aps-c cameras and they work fine. The set I linked to is for m43 cameras and should work with your G7 and 14-42mm lens.

The first question I would ask - what story are you trying to tell? That is, what do you want us to understand about your subjects - that would be of interest and not seen or told before - thousands of times.

Flowers and plant portraits are tough because they have been shot and shot and shot. They can be useful for learning about the use of aperture and composition, but pretty tough to shoot portrait images that haven't ALREADY been shot, so pretty tough to get really interesting images, unless you get really unique light, interesting bug action, or a perspective other than portrait - like a tight macro of a portion of the flower or plant that makes for a more interesting composition.

I would highly recommend a book I have suggested in classes, as it really helps a person to learn to see and capture interesting frames. Understanding Exposure, Fourth Edition, by Bryan Petersen.

My favorite (above). Soft lighting, nicely composed.

Sorry (above), snapshot of a mundane subject

Decent (above) back of flowers can work, subject in dead center and get in closer - the photo is of a flower not its background

Mundane, perhaps get closer, another centered subject - perhaps use "rule of thirds" as a starting point

What I did was, joined a photography club/camera club.  There is always someone that knows more than you(or at least think they do).  You can get tips there.  As well as, you can see the results of others that might inspire you to try other techniques.  I think you will find the members very kind and supportive.  Plus, there are outings, which are social and quite fun.  Just something to think about.  Continue shooting, no matter what anyone says.

The flower is very dark. It is also hugging the left a bit too much. If you cropped it that way, I suggest cropping looser. If shot that way, I suggest leaving more room when you shoot in the future.

This is a very flat exposure with bugs. I don't see the point.

The exposure is nice if a bit low, but there is too much busy background. Crop it a lot more.

Exposure is okay; not a very interesting subject gut the branch on the left is distracting so I would crop the left to get straight branch.

Photo1. Needs some punch. Exposurevalue/lightnes too low. The yellow needs more "glow". And crop maybe less close to the border of the left side.

Photo2, to make it better, more details and microcontrast on the front leaves.

Photo3 background looks like barf after a pizza. Sorry, and the flower isn't special enough to hide it.

Photo 4 highlight flares, if it's bleeched, no data, then exposure was off.

A white thin paper as umbrella maybe?

Ok that where the negatives.

Flowers are difficult to get right.

Colors are often dull in post. Exposure and surrounding brightnes.

Late afternoon yellowisch light is less hars. Would bring contrast in the yellow flower.

The one with the most potential is the second.

A drop of water on one leave, sparkle of sun in that droplet and details in the leaves. Would be lifting the image to nice one.

Every 100 shots gives one real keeper the others are practise. 🙂

Which processing application do you use?

Are they rawfiles or oocjpegs?
