What is the maximum number of photos you ever took with a Powershot?

My currently most used camera is the G9X II and I have almost made 10.000 photographs with it. For me that is a lot for one camera. I can only remember owning one other camera that made that many photographs. All my other cameras were already replaced by other camera’s before they reached the 10.000 mark. (yes, I seriously suffer from G.A.S)

I would have probably already replaced my G9X II for a G9X III if it was available. But despite all the rumors it still isn’t released (if it is ever going to be released)

In the last couple of months I have been considering buying a new G9X II to replace the one I’m currently using. Not that it has any issues but for some reason I believed that Powershots or other compacts are only build to last 10.000 shots. That was until I recently read, on the Panasonic Compact Camera Talk forum, that someone had already taken more than 220.000 photos with his TZ90.

I know that a Lumix isn’t a Powershot but I would like to know: What is the maximum number of photos you ever took with a Powershot?

My first Canon TX1 took at least 9932 'photos'. but at least a quarter of them were actually videos, so the actual number of frames would have been far greater. I often used video frames to provide stills from moving subjects that would be difficult to capture with still shots. For instance:

The Canon TX1 recorded videos in AVI format using Motion JPEG, which, rather inefficiently using memory, took a series of stills in rapid succession (1280 x 720 p @30 fps) using more memory space than other formats. So, as well as playing like normal videos, these could be played back frame by frame on my computer and a suitable screen grab made.

The TX1 was the size of an ordinary pack of cards, with a strong metal case into which the lens retracted when turned off; an adequate F3.5-5.6 39-721mm zoom lens (with Super macro focus down to zero mm!); 1 /2.5" 7.1MP sensor; stereo sound recording with video - or for sound only. Only 160 frames-per-charge small battery was easily acceptable with a few spare batteries. But the 1.8", 114,000 dot screen, though with a 270° swivel, was low-res and difficult to use at extreme zoom. And though many large handed reviewers panned the diminutive joy stick controls, many users hoped for an improved TX2.

For general videos you can use FFmpeg, if you don't mind using the command line.

I think I'm well over 10,000 with my G12. My daughter still uses it.

Bought on Dec 30, 2011. I'd have to load up various Lightroom libraries to check the count.

I can't answer that, I'm not done shooting with them Β  (I too suffer from G.A.S., but I also don't seem to get rid of anything)

If you are not done shooting with them you can tell us how much you have shot with them until now!

I have made 9755 photos with my most used Powershot  a canon G9X II. That number also includes a few movies (My guess would be not more than 100) and a few on camera edit's (no more than 10) which also advance the counter strangely enough.

There seems to be a few people who made more than 10.000 photos with a single Powershot but what I'm curious about: Is there someone who made much more than that?

My D10 is somewhere over 200,000. Not sure exactly because the shot counter says zero now

My a540 also has quite a few

I kinda think that one may have been reset at some point too. I took a few more shots after that to see if it would roll over at exactly 64K, and it didn't

I have a few others with 10s of thousands.

The big numbers were mostly done with CHDK scripts, so there was a full shutter actuation for each shot, but I didn't manually shoot them all.

Thanks for your reply! Those are quite big numbers. That means that I can probably use my G9X II for quit a bit longer!

I bought the G9X when it came out in December 2015. I wanted to upgrade for the mark II, however upon seeing the review on this website, it seemed to me that the picture quality is either the same or even a bit softer, so I skipped it and thought I'm just going to buy the mark III a year or two later. Of course at that point I didn't know the III is not going to be out for another 5 years (so far).

Consequently I shot more than 20.000 photos on the G9X. It's still working perfectly well, however I now use it mostly for video. I had the Pixel 2, 3 and now 4XL and it's just so much easier with the dynamic range and everything, that I don't see much point in carrying a dedicated camera anymore. Sure if you pixel-peep the camera is still better, but not by much.

Which brings me to another question - have you compared the video recording on G9X mark I vs. mark II? I wanted to get a decent low-light camera just for videos and the mark II is very reasonably priced, but I wonder if I'm going to see any improvement at all.

There is no reason to assume that the mark II would be producing images that are softer than the mark I so they probably had a bad copy. Jeff Keller admitted in the comments that It could have been sample variation but never added this remark to the review (unlike reviews of other cameras we're they suspected sample variation). I think there is something strange about the review of the mark II.

There have been rumours about the release of a mark III more than a year ago. But it still isn't released maybe it will be released after corona and the chip shortage has ended but I wouldn't be surprised if it will never be released.

That's good to hear!

For me the main reason for using a dedicated camera is the ergonomics. I don't like shooting with a phone.

When It comes to video the G9X II is not my preferred camera. I always struggle with the focus. I'm slowly starting to understand how to get it to focus where I want it.

I have never owned a mark I so I can't tell if the mark II is better.
