Should I exchange the 24-70 F2.8 lens for my R6?

Hi

I ordered Sigma 24-70 ART for my Canon R6 and still waiting for the delivery (the second half of July). I was thinking about Canon EF 24-70 F2.8 USM II but finally I am awaiting Sigma. The longer I wait the more I have second thoughts about my purchase.

Maybe it is better for me to buy Canon USM II? I do not need optical stabilization, as I generally work with high shutter speeds. I am even reconsidering stretching my budget to buy RF 24-70F2.8, which is perfect scenario.

So the question is: Should I give the Sigma a chance to work with R6?

Should I switch to Canon EF 24-70F2.8 USM II?

Buying RF 24-70 is a sort of the perfect scenario, and a kind of rhetorical question.

EF 24-70/2.8 II

You can get a good copy of EF 24-70/2.8 II under us $ 1,000 if you are lucky enough.

RF lens are overpriced due to the shrinking market. less production means higher price.

In most case, There have no difference between EF- L and RF-L Lens.

I had experienced the Keep rate of EF lenses on R5 body is higher than on DSLR.

EF 24-70/2.8 II is one of the greatest lens from Canon. This lens sold a lot of cameras.

In terms of optical quality the order is:

1. RF 24-70

2. EF 24-70

3. ART 24-70

But the real life differences are small and I honestly don't think you will notice them in normal viewing distances from your final photo's. So the 2nd question is about difference in handling, minimal focus distance, AF speed etc. and I would argue that everything taken into consideration, it doesn't change the order above. 3rd question is price and whether the minor performance differences are worth the price differences.

I use the EF 24-70 mkII on the R5. I can't think of a scenario the AF wouldn't be fast enough.

I think the first two options are best value for money. I would take the RF lens for best bokeh quality and for best stabilization. The OP has the f/2.0 on the wish list, so when choosing an RF lens it might be worth it to stretch a little bit further to that one. The OP also stated he's not interested in stabilization. In that case I would definitely go with the EF mkII. In my market the price difference to the RF f/2.8 is 1500 euro. Get yourself a sigma 40mm f/1.4  Art and keep spare change if you want crazy high levels of sharpness and fast shutter speeds.

In Poland it is almost impossible to get USM II under 1000 USD. The cheapest second hand is 1500 USD. I ordered the new Sigma 24-70 with 2yrs of warranty for 1400 USD. The RF 24-70 is 2580 USD.

I am aware of two things:

  1. Sigma is less sharp around the edges, whereas EF USM II is much sharper. It might be critical for landscape, which is not my kind of photography.
  2. Sigma must work via adapter (as EF USM II too).

It's possible the Sigma has a bit smoother bokeh compared to the Canon EF mkII. I have the latter and it can be a bit harsh in some cases.  It might be worth it to do some research on bokeh.

Forget Sigma please. 8 stops stabilize is amazing,if you use the sigma lens with the stabilize, the IBIS will be banned

The most important factor for me is fast AF and keeper ratio. In sports/action bokeh is less important IMO.

I am still debating on Sigma and canceling the order and grabbing second hand but in a mint condition EF24-70 USM II

OS in Sigma is the least important factor for me. Fast AF and sharpness is my priority. It is nice to have a new lens, not second hand, if I am to buy a new 24-70 EF USM II, I would buy RF 24-70 then.

I expect the latter to have a tiny bit faster AF.  Just my expectation, take it for what it's worth (and nothing more please).

I cancelled the order for Sigma 24-70 ART. Canon EF 24-70 USM II F2.8 is on its way to me, in the mint condition. The reasons:

  1. Better optical IQ - samples speak for themselves
  2. I do not need IS
  3. Faster and more reliable AF - I found a couple of opinions that AF likes to hunt in.

I think in your case that's the right decision.
