What version of the 70-200/2.8?  If it's II or III, I would expect AF and IS with a 2xIII to be better than the 100-400 v1.  The 100-400 v1 is a virtual antique in terms of IS and AF speed, even if you have an optically-exceptional copy.

Take your zooms, and for not much more than the EF 2X III, get a used Canon EF 400mm f5.6 L instead.

I think for the most part a long zoom will be constantly at 400mm and the Canon prime will be superior to your alternatives.

Congratulations.  Thank you for planning so far in advance.  Gives you time to know your gear too.  A lot could happen in six months.  Changes, new gear, available used gear...even new bodies.

It was the old version 1 70-200/2.8. The 100-400 I is OK but the II is great. I use it with the 1.4xIII regularly to get 140-560/8 for surfing photos

The mark II and III lenses AF significantly faster with some bodies with the mark III Canon TCs.  The mark III version of the 70-200/2.8L may be significantly sharper wide open at the long end than the mark I.

I know. However I am thinking of changing to the RF system soon so  I will get the RF 70-200 to replace mine.
