July 2021 Part 1 — This Month Through Your Adapted Lens

[Sorry I’m late. July just snuck up on me.]

An invitation to dust off your precious (or not so precious) glass and head out to make some photographs: the real reason for the existence of all our lenses.

Here are the guidelines:

  • Images with a removable adapter between lens and camera
  • Images with the lens mount permanently modified to fit a different camera
  • Images with the lens held by hand without an adapter (freelensing)

Including metadata (camera, lens, aperture, shutter speed) is encouraged but not required.

Comments are encouraged, but please keep them friendly and constructive.

Continued from June 2021 Part 2 .

Nesting House Sparrow

House Sparrows nest in the lighting fixtures in the walkways on campus. We see them all the time, and sometimes forget their strength and beauty.

Alan

Bug's-Eye Cotton

After a couple weeks' break, the cottonwood trees are back... so I decided to try going low and close.

Re: Bokeh trigger warning

This is great use of bokeh to add a contrasting but complementary backdrop to this portrait. Without this element, this would have been a very nice portrait of the dog. With it, it’s a work of art.

Alan

Re: There is a season tern, tern, tern

Tracking a fast bird at 750 mm is no mean feat!

My favorite is the third. It has a great sense of motion and a lovely background.

Alan

Re: Bug's-Eye Cotton

These are very nice. I like the elements.

You and I have had this conversation many times before, and I’m sure this won’t be the last, but ... try these in black and white. You have contrasts in textures. You can work the different colors to give contrast in tones.

Regards,

Alan

Alan, I like the pic of the house sparrow. I like birds with personality, and they have quite a bit.

All of these taken with a Pentax-A 50mm 2.8 macro. I've been using it a lot lately, I love how it renders colors and how sharp it can be (if I nail focus).

28mm Nikon "D" on the Z5

Have been playing around with my new Nikon Z5 + FTZ adaptor, by which -pleasant surprise- the D lenses are recognized, and the aperture can be controlled by the front dial. Focus is still manual, but this is a non-issue thanks to the excellent MF aids in the Z bodies. Here are a few examples from today:

Cheers,

Ricky

Well, I gave it a try...

I admit I still prefer the color ones; I like the greens, I prefer the contrast between the greens and whites, and I like the extra touch of brown added by the leaf in the last pic.

Had to add this one I got from a hike on Sunday. I didn't know marmots made a habit of climbing trees, but obviously they don't get very high up.

The funny thing is this was taken with a 50mm lens. He was less than 4 feet from the camera. Marmots aren't particularly high strung, though I got a hiss out of him when I moved to leave.

Re: There is a season tern, tern, tern

Well done. I've gone out to the local reservoir a few times when ring billed gulls come to fish as they pass through the area. I still haven't nailed one that I would consider a keeper.

I love the atmospherics too - I'm very partial to grey, chilly coasts and shores.  I can do without crowded, sunny, sunblock scented beaches.

In my hometown, they placed metal cobblestones in the pavement, in honor of the deported during WWII, and at/near where they lived. Most, unfortunately, mention an untimely death. This particular lady was killed in a death march on May 5th, 1945... our national liberation day...
