Samsung Galaxy NX - helpful info
2

Since a discussion about the functions of the GNX started in another thread (that's getting pretty long now), and a few of us here are newer owners of this amazing camera, I'm starting a new thread with tips and tricks. I just started using my first GNX a month ago and I'm still figuring out this quirky beast.

Here is something I just discovered. All the other cameras I own can be restarted from sleep mode by half pressing the shutter button. That doesn't work on the GNX, a half press does nothing. So I always had to reach over to the far away power button to restart the camera. Well, I just found out that a full press of the shutter button will start the camera from sleep. You may all know this already but for me this was a new discovery :).

If you find new tricks for your GNX please post them here.

Good tip, thanks!

Also, the adapter for the external mic arrived today and seems to work with my Rode videomicro. Need to test it some more as it's hard to tell which mic is being used through the small speaker. But actually the internal mics of the GNX are decent - the only time I'd need the external mic is when it's windy as can use the wind shield.

Another tip is to set the camera so that connections are only active when the screen is on. This will preserve battery and allow you to leave it on standby for a long time. I also try to turn all notifications off so they don't interrupt during taking pics. There is also a blocking mode to stop them all.

I made a silly mistake yesterday as changed the SIM cards over and tried to insert a new one without the adapter. For a while there was a panic as the nano SIM was stuck in the slot, but eventually I got it out!

Same thing happened to me! I didn't realize I needed an adapter and the Sim got stuck. But slamming the bottom of the camera against my hand a few times made the Sim come out luckily.

I have to find the setting to disable the connections. Thanks for the tip!

How do I get to this type of display? (right of screen). For some reason I cannot pull this screen layout up.

I can change those setting easily through the I-function button on my lens or by pressing forward on the wheel but I cannot get the settings to display like shown in the picture. Any advice? Thanks! 👍🏻

Could this be the non-professional mode?

Just replicated this. Click on the cog wheel for settings. Then again on the cog wheel.

User type - from Professional change to Standard

Now click on 'Mode' or turn the dial and select 'Expert' you will get all ifn settings for each PASM setting.

Any advice on a cheap screen protector? I am thinking because the screen is so smartphone-ish I can get one which is meant for an old phone rather than for the camera.

Another half tip: Samsung Link app can be uninstalled if you update it since it has been terminated by Samsung in 2016

https://www.sammobile.com/2016/11/04/samsung-link-terminated-out-of-the-blue/

Now... Even though I don't use this anymore (Might have used it in the past) I am a bit afraid of removing it for fear I would lose the 'Screen mirroring' feature. Not sure if it has to do anything with it though.

Has anyone removed it?

Thank you, got it! Unfortunately it disappears after each shot and you need to select 'Expert' mode anew. I think I will stick with Professional Mode. I like the fact that I can change three settings just with the wheel when looking through the viewfinder.

Regarding a screen protector. I still had some matte phone screen protectors (I think this one was from my Alcatel 4s Windows phone) which I cut to the right size by marking the GNX outline with a sharpie. Except for the very edges where the protector lifts a little due to the cut edges, it now fits perfectly. I found some screen protectors on German Ebay, but I didn't have time to order them before we left for Spain. In the end I am happy enough with my home made protector. Though I think I will order the exact protectors anyways, just to have in case my version fails. At this point you got to grab what's still offered for this discontinued camera as one doesn't know what will still be available for it in the future.

ahh I know that German seller on ebay. Bought protectors for nx500 and nx1 from them. But with GNX - being such a large screen I am sure I will find some bargain £1 tempered glass protectors for some old phones with this screen size.

Otherwise I will cave in and spend the dough :))

Just a few sample pictures straight out of camera jpegs. GNX with NX 18-200mm.

The pictures are just test pictures shot on a walk (a couple are still from Germany). Our light here in Seattle is so different from the light we had in Germany and Spain, wanted to try my new setup in my hometown's more blue-toned light. So not meant to be artistic statements of any kind. Just test shots.

I don't pixel peep. But I love the tonailty of the GNX (and Samsung in general). However, the 'touch of 3D' I see with my GNX pictures (and also with the NX300 and NX3000) is what I was missing from my NX500 jpegs which looked somewhat flat to me, not sure how to correctly describe it. Beautifully sharp and detailed but as if they were missing a little bit of dimension.

At 200mm (and a few below at times) you can see the 18-200mm suffering a bit.  The scarecrow seems to have had some camera shake.  I included those far shots to show the range of the lens too.

Re: Samsung Galaxy NX - helpful info

I bought the weebill S for use with my NX1 but I thought I'd try it with the GNX. The large screen makes it possible to manual focus with the follow focus motor. It'd be better if there was focus peaking in video mode, but I think only the NX500 and NX1 can do this?

Anyhow, the FHD video from the GNX is still very good and the stabilisation the gimbal provides along with manual focus makes video with the prime lenses a real possibility.

Re: Samsung Galaxy NX - helpful info

Has anyone got any tips to speed up the operating system on the GNX? I wish Samsung hadn't skimped on the processor and memory - I'm encountering quite a bit of lag at times, which is a shame.

I've tried disabling any apps that aren't in use but it's still laggy at times.

On another note, I inserted a U3 micro SD to boost the memory and set the camera to record to there. But it seems to spend much longer buffering, unless it's my imagination. I wonder if it can't take advantage of faster cards and whether it's best to just save to the internal memory?

I've been tinkering around with my GNX as well and I'm mainly giving up on the phone side of things on it. Not because it is not useful, I'm just not using it. It's an old 'phone' connected with a brilliant camera. I will mainly use it with Whatsapp when I'm traveling. My Galaxy watch will be my phone and message receiver and my camera will do WhatsApp. I can even connect the two.

I so wish there'd be a working root. I wonder if Samsung S3 or S4 rooting would actually work on the GNX but I don't want to risk bricking it. I know to little about rooting.

But I have been unsuccessful downloading older version APKs for Adobe Photoshop. I'd love to do in camera raw processing but just cannot find a working raw converter. I found a Photoshop version that downloaded, but it is not running properly and all I can do is at filters to the pictures.

I still think the GNX output, general handling and screen is worth every penny. And it perfectly fits into my hand. It's light, especially with one of the pancakes. My only gripe is wakeup time. Especially from sleep to using the viewfinder.

However, to me, the GNX has THE most reality-like output of all cameras I have ever used, along with the NX300. What I mean by that is that the pictures look exactly like the actual scene, colors and all. For example, I found a Fuji Xpro-1 with 34mm 1.4 lens for unbelievable $9.99 at a local thriftstore. Very good working condition at that.

This sucked my into the world of Fuji. I bought another wider lens to go with it and ended up buying another, smaller Fuji as well. I LOVE the Fuji output. It's artistic, film-like, larger than life (very similar in that way to the Ricoh GR). The camera is a joy to use with its film simulations. You can make jpegs look like various old film types.

But to me it's an art camera. And no matter what filter I use, even with the most neutral Provia, the outcome changes the feeling of what I actually saw in a scene.

The GNX gives me exactly what I saw, the moment, the colors, even the sharpness I perceived with no change to the default jpeg settings. It does not enhance or boost anything unless you want it to.

That was my reason to sell my NX500s. I did not get that exact reality output. I'm sure it can be perfectly dialed in in post-processing. But then how do I know what it really looked like?

I'll be leaving for Germany again in a month. Last time I had both the Xpro-1 and the GNX with me alongside a NX Mini.

This time I'll bring only one camera. I go back and forth on it which one to bring. But in the end I'm pretty sure it will be the GNX with the 18-200, the 16-50PZ (with Ricoh wide converter DW-6 attached) and the 30mm pancake.
