Android tablet issue

Android tablet issue - when I view my photos on my tablet it keeps crashing because the thumbnails get to 14 gigs after a short while. And then I have to clear them. IS there anyway to stop this problem.

It would help if you gave us the specs of your tablet along with any extra info like what size micro SD card is fitted etc..

Re: Android tablet issue

This did not work on my Moto phone, where thumbnail accretion is irritating but not causing problems, but the writer has a (rooted) Samsung.  I'll be interested if there is a general fix.

at least im not alone - I have to delete them 3-4 times a day and its a real pain. It looks like if you have many photos the thing just gets broke.

I use a file transfer app to microSD, more because certain camera apps (like GCam) won't save photo or video output anywhere except internal storage - with regular uploading to cloud storage the thumbnail cache never interferes with function, though it's still crazy. This app is a little tricky to set up, but once done it's one click to transfer the media as well as empty the thumbnail cache. (I had to manually add DNG file recognition to transfer, but that is doable.)

Doesnt work for me as I used my tablet to showcase my photos so I dont wnat to transfer them- I do as I have no choice, Even if I removed ever app but photo apps I think it will only delay the problem.

I can understand - last I looked I couldn't find any permanent solution.  If many photos are stored, you end up playing whack-a-mole with constantly regenerating caches.

From the discussion, it seems your work would be a lot simpler if you moved to a Surface or other Windows tablet.

I’ve actually switched to iPad and currently have over 1800 images from various sources and anything that doesn’t fit in devices memory is stored on cloud and very simply downloaded from the cloud to view / share etc

You said that Android insisted on generating thumbnails, which periodically occupy so much memory that your device crashes. I set Windows File Explorer so that it does not generate thumbnails. (I also happen to use classic shell.) I use well-behaved image viewer programs like Fast Stone and Irfanview.

I am too sloppy with the cloud. Google photos got me with the free photos thing and then shut it off - if they put it to race mode I had to race to download my photos before they erased them but for now they are in the legacy stage.

Anyway the race to reclaim you photos when the service is bought out/discontinued /terms change is a game I no longer have the time for. Its ok for I am not sure if i want to keep photos sure in the temporary but its just a legal ransom ware waiting to happen for the paid services - how many doubling of price would you willing to save your photos?

The Ipad I look into it, thought ethically apple products are the worst so I try to avoid them and there suicide nets as much as possible - not to say that most electronics don't have slave labor and worse in the supply chain somewhere it a matter of degree.

Which app are you using to view them? There are lots of different gallery apps on Android, so you can try downloading a few to see if there are any you like. Generating thumbnails would be done by which ever app you're using, so different apps might work differently. Some might be more efficient at the thumbnail generation and/or the retaining of a cache. If you're using the file system manager a lot with the photos, then that too has 3rd party alternatives that might handle their caches differently.

I have always used Samsung phones and tablets, so I do use their gallery app, but I've also used Piktures and F-Stop Gallery as local gallery apps. (I'm sure other people have their favourites.) Other than Samsung's file manager, I also use X-plore, but I know Solid Explorer and Total Commander are also some favourites.

Alternatives might not be any better, but it's something you can try to see if the experience is any different.

Something to consider. Currently I have removed almost all 3rd party apps so I can delay the problem and use  the Samsung app which works great minus the thumbnail problem.  I am reluctant to ad anything that takes more memory but I ll look around at reviews.

I was hoping for a simple solution out of the box but it appears there is not one.

Even if you are not impressed with windows 10, A surface go 2 would be boondockers for what you are trying to do.  And yes.  Do not get an apple.  Speaking from personal experience.

Well I will consider my options . Sounds like the app option in the short version is possible but no one knows for sure so its going to be trail and error. I have noticed it seems to be SD card related it the card is 32 gigs or smaller it seems to work better but the  photos are also a bit less so it might the a photo threshold issue..

I am looking at what you are trying to do and my two computers running windows do it fine, as would the go 2.  If you don't like windows that's fine.  I am just giving you my opinion on what would work for you.

What is the memory/storage in your tablet? Are you talking about the 8" tablet with 16G storage and 3G ram?

I use the Tab S6 with 256G storage and 8G ram and I have no problem with thousands of photos.
