everything would down to the flange distance of the system.

An adapter for cross platform adaption is to put in certain distance in between the camera and the lens to allow proper focusing of the original design of the lens. A general theory is that the shorter the flange distance of a system (on the camera side) it would be easier to adapt any lens of other system which is designed to work with longer flange distance. On the reverse situation, the lens might not be able to focus infinity or will have bad vignetting etc...

As per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flange_focal_distance , the flange distance of Sony E-mount is 18mm vs M43 is 19.25mm...
