35mm (Nifty Fifty) options with AF on Fuji

Hi all,

I'm in the market for a 35mm (Nifty Fifty), just a good middle prime to bridge the gap between my long telephoto and my wide 16mm. I've seen talk about Fuji's 35mm f1.4 being the lense people rave about but I'm just wanting peoples opinion on other 35mm that use the Fuji x Mount.

I'm happy to hear opinions on Fujinon or about third party lense manufacturers. I'm just wanting to get an overall picture of any and the pros and cons of these lenses, and which one people believe is good for the money.

Thanks!

The Fuji ones (and the Zeiss Touit 32) are all excellent. It basically depends on whether you need f/1.4.

What do you photograph as your subject matter?

I have used three different (Fuji 35 f1.4, Fuji 35 f2 WR and the Viltrox 33 f1.4) 50mm equivalent focal lengths and all are good. None stood out to me better than the other so have ended up with the Viltrox 33 f1.4 as it is the cheapest.

I have not tried the XC version of the 35 Fuji (nor the Tokina 35 f1.4 which is the Viltrox with a Tokina badge and Tokina coatings) but the optics are the same as the XF f2 WR. Not tried the Zeiss either. So I can't comment on those.

All three give good/great results and the only real limiting factor in their capability is the photographer holding the camera.

What is best for you is your guide. Do you want an extra stop of light, do you want weather sealing or would you like to save some money?

The only real consideration is the market value of your lens if you ever want to sell them ever again. The Fuji 35 f1.4 will remain more valuable. At least for a while until the new Fuji 33 f1.4 is released.

Whatever you get, the lens is better than the manual focus 50mm Henri Cartier-Bresson used and he did ok.

Four of my test images from these different lenses at their widest apertures. One additional test image at f2.8.

Street, portrait and landscape mostly.

Very true and thanks for the pictures too. And yeah seeing as there is no obvious differences between them in image quality it all comes down to wr and price really.

I just bought the XC 35/2 but haven't received yet so can't give results. My desire was to have a small, lightweight alternative to my 18-55, and to enjoy the selective focus from the wider aperture at times. I bought the X-S10 instead of XT-4 because I have discovered that I really prefer smaller and lighter with my camera gear, and hope this XC35 will work as a good walk around solution for me (I'll never get too far away from my zoom if I'm anticipating varying requirements).

Most reviewers and users report that IQ with the XC matches the XF, and I am not concerned about the lack of rugged construction. I am very careful and gentle with my gear and have had no breakage in many years of use.

It remains to be seen whether or not I'll use it enough to warrant the purchase. If not I'll put it up for someone else to try. I considered picking up a cheap manual focus 35, but decided against that because I think they are really niche products that don't have excellent all around IQ, and the manual focus process usually ends up with more not perfectly focused images.

For portrait, the 35 f/1.4 is superior.  The rendering is wonderful…and the extra stop to open when needed for greater subject isolation simply puts it ahead of the f/2 version

I purchased the 35 XC cheapo lens as a step between my wides and tele lenses, I wasn`t expecting much at all but I am pleasingly surprised just how good it can be. OK, it isn`t weather proof and hasn`t got an aperture ring but it sure can deliver.

That first photo of yours is over-sharpened.  Obvious halos present.

I really like the Zeiss Touit 32mm,  the three Zeiss lenses make a really nice light street walking set with my X-E3 or X-Pro2

I reckon the XF 35mm f/1.4 is just the thing for a street/portrait lens.

I deliberately removed the exif information from the images I uploaded. I suspect no one on here would want to guess which image was taken by which lens. Why is that?

By all means get the Fuji 35 f1.4. It's a good lens and will retain its value more than the others. But apart from that, it isn't going to get you anything more than any other equivalent 50mm lens.

The lens you use is nothing compared to what you the photographer who makes the image can do.

Re: 35mm (Nifty Fifty) options with AF on Fuji

Either one of the Fuji versions is good. I love the 35/1.4 but I sold it and kept the 35/2 because of the AF speed and WR. Then I sold the f/2 and now I want the 35/1.4 back... or maybe I will wait for the new 33/1.4...

The contrast and warmth of the f/2 lens are excellent. Only the micro contrast of the 35/1.4 is better when you look carefully. The f/1.4 renders a little cooler and less contrasty so the straight output may be seen as more natural for portrait and skin to some people. All are adjustable in PP, so the differences are somewhat negligible.

Some pictures taken with 35/2 below... Honestly I really Love this lens too! You probably won’t go wrong with either.

Did you mean my purple poppy images? if so they were produced for my facebook groups so need a touch up because facebook tends to destroy images a bit, if the reply wasn`t for me then OK

FYI, the XC35f2 produces the same photos as the XF35f2.

Flickr is a great place to find samples.
