This is what I was going to say.

An easy thing to test, which may narrow things down a bit.

I think Fuji will detect water damage and decline to repair.

Saw this in a Roger Cicala blog: no self respecting repair shop will touch once they see water damage. They might be able to repair something, but can not warranty it will stick

This is most likely while obviously thecamera and the sensor works, a shift of 1.5 EV being after all a minor problem

Now why not use this camera with a permanent EV correction ?

In PS I have corrected the file (JPEG) in a second !

Or on manual.  But I'd not trust the camera to continue to work, esp. if it was salt water.  Corrosion is, well, corrosive.

The OP has said it was a wave splash. It is almost certainly beyond economic repair. Worth considering but I'd not be hopeful.

Never ever would buy a camera that’s already partly broken from wave splash, but that’s just me.

A 1 month observation period. Again I'm not too pessimistic the files are ok in PS and easily corrected.

Anyway as you stated, nobody will seriously repair it, if it lasts the issue is minor

One hypothesis.. and the pilow case tip.....
2

If we imagine that some humidity is still present in the body that could explain for the erratic overexposure.... (different from one shot to the other)

Put the camera without lens in the bottom of a pilow case take a hair dryer set to the first t° (mild heating) then warm the pilowcase from its opening  with the hair dryer for a while avoiding exceeding say 35°C leave the camera cooling down and try

If this did not worked, an idea to save your 150$ investment would be to use the camera with a permanent -2 or -3 EV correction, plus if needed the addition of a ND filter a rather cheap solution

Good luck for the future of this odd camera

Does the issue still exist when setting the Exp Comp dial to -1 or with an ND filter? If you don't have an ND, try shooting through sunglasses.

Good call, my money’s on the shutter and this would be a perfect test. Also, if the shutter is fried and can’t be repaired, it might still be useful as an e-shutter only body going forward, but best to discover that now before the shutter fails entirely and locks the camera up.

Out of interest - does a RAW file show the same overexposure as its associated out of camera jpeg?

Yes, are the RAW files effective and lets not forget about using the electronic shutter. If the electronic shutter works, I suspect it would be a safe bet that the problem is mechanical. If the electronic shutter does not work, you are looking at something other than a mechanical defect.

Hello,

Thank you all very much for your guesses, inputs ideas and advice !

I'll have my hands on the camera tomorrow, i'll try the raw files and check if the issue persists on both mecanical and electronic shutter

i'll upload the files of course

As I said, i bought the camera knowing it was basically sold for parts, so given the amount i paid for it, i'm more than happy with what i got

Thank you again !

Wanted to add that I experience the same thing with an x-e1 I bought used recently. But it only happens sometimes.

And the jpeg is very washed out. The raw file i can bring back to 'normal' exposure with one click of 'auto' in Lightroom. But the raw file is initially washed out too.

Here's a screen shot of my lightroom library. First two images upper left are inside the train station. When I walk outside, bam, blown out images. I tried readjusting exposure, meter reading you know, spot, average etc. Nothing fixed it. I had to find a spot with less light, much less, and the camera seems to re-adjust itself and all good from there. Weird.

This said. It's my first experience with fuji ilc. Bought a used 27mm lens for it. I'm really enjoying using the camera. One other thing not related to exposure. Focus can be hit or miss. I'm used to more modern bodies that are fast and nearly always hit focus where I want.

My first fuji? An F30 way back when.
