Wide angle lens, EF-S mount vs M mount
1

Hi! I´m a recent M200 owner and i´d like to ear from someone with more experience wheter i should go for a CANON EF 10-18 IS STM wide angle lens and use it with my adaptor or should i go straight to a M mount Canon EF-M 11-22mm?

I came from a Canon 500D (Rebel T1i / Kiss X3) and when i bought the M200 i went for a Viltrox adaptor in order to use the 75-300mm lens that came with the 500D. Now i need an wide angle lens and i don´t know for sure which lens to buy.

Thanks in advance.

Go for the 11-22, the ef s 10-18 adapted is going to look  like a bowler hat on at ballet dancer and will be as unbalanced as said ballet dancer performing swan lake in a pair of hiking boots.

I do agree that the EF-M 11-22 is the way to go if you can afford it. In my case I already had EF-EF-S to EF-M convertor.

Huh? Here's a shot with a EF-S 10-18mm taken within minutes of picking it up from the post office.

i was actually impressed with this lens considering it's used and cost me $105.00, 75% cheaper than the EF-M 11-22mm

Canon EF-M 11-22mm would be my suggestion.

I have been using this excellent and compact lens since getting my original M shortly after it was released (although I already had an EF-S 10-18mm with my 70D and a Canon M mount adapter that was bundled with the M). I now use it on my M50 Mark II.

At first, I thought I was unable to “live” without certain “outstanding” EF and EF-S lenses that I already had. Over time, the practical advantage of small size and light weight wins over the desire to “prove” the superiority of any piece of gear.

Welcome to the forum.

In all probability your M50 10-18 MM combo fared a bit better ergo wise than the same lens on the M200 the OP has.Nice shot BTW 🙂

In my opinion the 11-22mm is worth its money. This lens has captures a lot of my travel memories. The small form factor and most important the images it produces makes it worth considering. What to watch out for? The compactness comes from the lens retract mechanism which some folks find annoying. It is a matter of individual preference as I value the compactness over the trade-off over this minor inconvenience.

Definitely don't buy that EF-S lens for your M200 unless you're planning to use it on an APS-C DSLR as well. The 11-22mm lens will let you keep your Viltrox adapter permanently on your 75-300. I bought my 11-22mm lens to replace my EF-S 10-22mm in 3014, just because of the size of it, and I'm really glad I did. It's a better lens and is still going strong, so it's effectively cost me less than £1 per week.

I have an ef-s 10-22 which is a good lens. However, I bought the ef-m 11-22. The size matters! The 11-22 has an outstanding IS as well. The image quality is great.

Now I need to sell the 10-22.

Another vote for the EF-M 11-22mm.

I had the EF-S 10-18mm. I found it quite sharp at 18mm and sharp in the center at 10mm, however the edges were slightly soft at the wide end even stopped down.

I upgraded to the EF-M 11-22mm, very happy with the choice. Not only smaller and lighter but tack sharp across the frame at all focal lengths and apertures, there are very few lenses you can say that about. Resolving power and contrast even in the center is definitely higher than the EF-S 10-18.

Well, after reading all the replies i´m inclined to the 11-22mm M mount.

You can´t all be wrong at the same time i guess :-D.

The diference between both lens is about 50€ or 40£ more or less, so i guess it´ll pay off buying the M mount lens.

And, as sugested i´ll keep the Viltrox adaptor attached to the 75-300mm which i mostly use once in a while and to shoot wildlife.

Thanks to everyone!

Maybe this will sway you a bit more in the 11-22's direction.

Pretty neat trick -- how did you get an EF-S lens directly mounted on an M body without an adapter (if that's what this is)?

This what the EF-S 10-18 IS STM looks like with the Canon EF - EOS M adapter on my M6ii, next to the EF-M 11-22

No neat trick Larry, a plain and simple screw up . Meant to show it with the adapter to illustrate the size/bulk differences .You did a a better job   BTW mine was screen grab from Camersize.Com

You don’t go out and create images day after day, month after month, year after year, and keep reminding yourself, “I saved 40£ buying this lens.”

Enjoy the EF-M 11-22mm.

The advantage of mirrorless cameras and lenses designed for them is an image free of artifacts due to the shorter distance lens to sensor.  At least that's what I've read.

You might compare the lenses at The Digital Picture.

I own the EF-S 10-18 and use it a lot.  It's sharp and CA is easily correctable in camera for jpegs, and in DDP4 for RAW files.  But I wouldn't hang it on a M200 unless it was already in my kit.

11-22 is the reason to stick with M system!

I agree! Also the sharp wide open, inexpensive EF-M 22mm f2 and truly compact EF-M zooms all around.

It's also a great system for adapting vintage lenses, if you're into that sort of thing. So far I've adapted many good vintage lenses with inexpensive $10 - $15 non-optical adapters that allow infinity focus, with excellent results: Minolta SR, Contax/Yashica, Nikon F and G, and M42 screw mount.

The ef-m lens goes up to 22mm and has IS.  The ef-s lenses don't have that combination.

22 in stead of 18mm makes just a little more usable as an all round lens.
