Excellent

Providing you can get close enough to your subject, the old 6mPixel cameras are sterling performers … love the saturated reds!

My *istDS is 'semi-retired' now, but my unmodified *istDL2, with it's 'digital preview' capability, still gets used for infra-red work occasionally

Enjoy!

Re: Birding with the *ist ds

You have inspired me to dust off my old *ist DS. I had been saving it to take along on jaunts that might endanger camera hardware, intending to leave my K-3 kit behind in safety. Sadly, I got old and can no longer go on such jaunts. But if one doesn't have to crop, one can still get excellent images out of the DS, as proven by this example.  It is certainly "good enough" for Web use . . . and, let's face it, most of our work appears nowhere else. Sincere thanks to the OP.

Great photo. That was a great 6mp sensor in a great camera for its time.

The lens was the siggy 17-70, very popular with this camera back in the day....so, yes, I was very close!  Gang gangs, when they are feeding, think about food and nothing else.

That's true, Henry. As an aside, I was happily surprised to find the eneloops still pretty much fully charged after about five years. Damn fine batts.

It was indeed a great camera with a class leading sensor (also used by Nikon iirc). My first DSLR was Pentax because, at the time, the viewfinder was so bright and clear. Looking through the viewfinder of the equivalent Canon at the time was like a long and dark tunnel.

One can't be unhappy with results like that out of old tech.

Just goes to show that we don't need quite as many megapixels as we think....

wow.  i feel like i took a journey back in time.  I had it in 2004 for 3 years until finally couldn't resist the temptation to upgrade to the K10D

Fantastic! Reminds me I should take my faithful K10D for a spin more often too.
