Outlook suddenly won't let me open links in Chrome

I can click on links in email to my heart's content, but quite suddenly these have become dead. I have to copy each URL and paste to the Chrome search to get into each one. Yes, Chrome is my default browser, nothing has changed there. Anyone have a solution?

Re: Outlook suddenly won't let me open links in Chrome

Monthly Windows patching just went out this week.

Did you install those?

Yes, it's all automatic with my system. But I stick to Chrome as my default surfer.

Re: Outlook suddenly won't let me open links in Chrome

Just to add another data point, my Windows 10 Home system also auto-updates both Windows and the Office suite. I also use Chrome as my default browser. Hyperlinks in email messages still work fine on my system, so I doubt if the problem was caused by either a Windows or Office update.

When you mention Outlook, are you referring to the desktop application or the Web version (Outlook.com)? I use the desktop application, and that's what I'm referring to above.

Outlook has a setting “Internet and network paths into hyperlinks” under User Configuration somewhere. Did that get mis-set by any chance?

Could be a security so-called enhancement. You are less likely to visit a malware website if you look at the URL during copy and paste.

There are other possibilities.

You're so helpful.

This is the desktop application I'm using, part of the Office 2019 suite, that i haven't changed, it just gets updated at intervals.

I can't find any such option in the 2019 edition.

Aha, it is a group policy.

Seems doubtful this is the cause. If you have W10 Home, impossible.

I'm in Win 10 Pro 20H2. There's no registry entry for any special group policy for Outlook 16; live hyperlinks is the default that I set under Autocorrect long ago.

I'm suspecting that Microsoft is trying to shift me to its new browser.

Re: Outlook suddenly won't let me open links in Chrome

Well, I dunno what  did, except that I went into Chrome itself and told it again that it was my default browser; but it's come straight.

Perhaps someone was praying for me.

Thanks to all for your counsel.

Honi the Circle Drawer, maybe.

In your Outlook 2019, were the website links represented in blue? When my emails arrive from people who send with "do not hyperlink" option, website links are regular black. This I'm sure is a security enhancement to force more-thoughtful copy and paste.

If they were blue, then it sounds like memory corruption or a software bug. I've seen blue links not activate when the network is in poor condition, e.g. WiFi overloaded with a W10 update my wife is doing. But that's not your case, if copy and paste worked.

No, there was nothing funny about the hyperlinks that way. They were from senders who really wanted me to open them, in all the cases.

Somehow it was not sufficient for me to confirm in Windows that Chrome was my default, as I did at least once. I had to confirm that setting in Chrome itself. I do suspect the Windows update of just over a day ago. Edge is v. persistent in edging itself in!
