Quick iMessage backup question for newby

I am new to iPhone. So am I understanding this correctly regarding iMessages and Contacts. If you want to backup iMessages and Contacts or have them available for re-install in case of a catastrophe, you must activate 2 step authentication on your iCloud account?

Otherwise there is no back up? Do they get backed up on my local machine backup without 2 step Authentication?

Thanks

You do not need to activate 2 factor authentication to use iCloud for Messages and Contacts (though 2FA is a good idea).

Turn on "Messages in iCloud" and your messages will be in sync with all of your apple devices (and they will be available for re-install in case you need to replace your phone).
