Thanks Sam. We enjoy them, they're very suitable for the rough and twisty roads round here 😊🏍️

Alwyn, your Rx10 photos are super clear and extra sharp. Just wondering if you did a lot of PP? Were the weather / lighting conditions perfect that day - no humidity, etc? Nicely done!

Thanks for the kind words. The images were taken on two different Historic Racing events at two different tracks:

*  Images 2 and 3 were taken at Mission Raceway near Vancouver, Canada in August 2018. This was a reasonably nice day but not particularly clear and bright at all.

*  The rest were taken at Pacific International Raceway, Kent, WA, in April 2019. This day started very gloomy and drizzly. The poor light was exacerbated by the fact that large parts of the track is in among heavy forest.

In terms of settings for the photographs: similar to aircraft, I try to use a shutter speed of no more than 1/250th for race cars. This is to not freeze the propellors, turning wheels and the background to give a sense of speed. This presents a bit of a challenge as you have to get your panning just right, otherwise you end up with blurred subjects. For this reason the settings for for instance the first image of the silver Shelby Daytona Coupe was at 1/100th, f7.1 and ISO80. I was pleasantly surprised how well it came out.

The brighter conditions and some head-on shots (no need to show spinning wheels) at Mission allowed me to use higher shutter speeds.

PP: all of these shots were JPGs as they were taken before I switched to using RAW. And all were processed to some extent. Typically I would adjust lighting, contrast and saturation. I normally also added a touch of sharpening but really nothing radical. As regards sharpening: I use the Unsharp mask (counter intuitive that...) in Fastone Image Viewer for editing. Typical sharpening settings are 10 (on a scale of 0 to 100 in Faststone) at 1mm. This is a pretty mild adjustment in terms of sharpening: I find the RX10 images are generally just very nice and sharp OOC.

The most heavily processed image was the previously mentioned silver Daytona and then also the red Ford Falcon (quite a lot more contrast and saturation than normal). Because I edited the original JPGs I unfortunately do not have original OOC images to show for comparison purposes.

Mike. is that a photograph of a photograph?

I am pretty sure that I have seen the original before, it, the Chevron Bridge, is actually the start of the 1966 race with Dan Gurney leading off in the 30 car, a Lola. Gurney won the race. John Surtees who was also in a Lola (7) won the series. The third car is I think a McLaren driven by Bruce McLaren. Some real legends of motor racing in just those first three and then you add other racers that day including folk like Graham Hill, Phil Hill, Chris Amon and Peter Revson...wow.

David

Some nice shots, there! Was the plane damaged, that you know of, from that last shot where he hit the pylon?! And you don't want to enter any of these? So far, we don't have any air races entered, AFAIK!

In Sweden there is a tradition to show-drive with beautiful preserved/restored American cars, in particular (but not exclusively) in the smaller communities:

Looks like this one is possibly a Chevy Bel Air convertible, but I'm not certain.

At first, I though this one was an Edsel, and I would've been surprised! But, alas, it's a Lincoln. One with interesting headlights, certainly!

No, the plane wasn't damaged — they may have reinforced wing leading edges. The inflated pylons are designed to rip easily and collapse. There's a crew on standby, ready to rush out and quickly replace damaged pylons. I'll see if I can dig out some pictures of them doing it

It was my first DSLR (only 6mp), and I don't think the quality of the images is all that great (I was still shooting JPEGs back then) . I wish I'd managed to capture a shot of the plane actually hitting tbe pylon — that would have been worth an entry!

Nigel,

It would, indeed! Good to hear no real damage, as well

As for entries with a camera that's "only" 6mp, I wouldn't worry much about that! If the composition of the image comes through, what does it matter which camera was used to shoot it?!

A Jaguar, I think.

Older, late 60s to early 70s Mustang!

Another pure racer, but not sure what. Alfa? Jag? Probably something else.

A second Cobra, I think. Replicas, most likely.

Here's the sequence of the pylon being replaced. Look at the times take on the shots to see how quickly they work:

14:44:46: The beheaded pylon is still deflating, but the repair squad is already on its way in a RIB

14:45:39: The squad is fitting the replacement pylon

The camera helicopter is overhead, filming the repair team in action

14:47:11: They've started inflating the replacement pylon

14:47:25: The pylon is almost up

14:48:08: Repair complete, the team is leaving

14:49:55: The gate is back in action, with the repair team's RIB still nearby

The whole process only took about five minutes, from pylon demolition to racing resuming.

Thanks - fun challenge. My primary shooting gear for racing is a crop sensor Nikon, but I would always carry my RX100 which was my wide angle lens to avoid changing lenses on a DSLR in dusty windy environments.... Most of the below are from various vintage races at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI.

Entry: Late 90s Benetton F1. Just past pedestrian bridge front straight Road America. 145 mph w/ 3 gears and 2000 feet of straight before turn 1....High speed panning is skill and a lot of luck. Happy w/ this one.

Nice panning, Nicholas!

Entry: Two Vettes - Turn 5 at Elkhart Lake. Applied a slight split tone after desaturation. The guy in the split window was fast!

Two VERY different Vettes, there! Too bad you weren't able to be in FRONT of them!

Entry: c'mon - I've got 2 more cylinders than that guy..... Exit of Turn 6 Elkhart Lake.

Two more cylinders, yes, but ALSO a few hundred more pounds, most likely, to go along with them!

The rest of these are for fun....

Italian car show downtown St. Paul.

Jordan F1. Normally aspirated V10, probably good for 800 HP at who knows, 17,000 RPM.

Velocity stacks on a Shadow CanAm. Less elegant than previous engine, but equally effective.

Torque! Shadow CanAm - Was a joy to watch, hear, and feel these (there were 2 racing that weekend). First rate preparation with drivers who knew their stuff.

REALLY like this shot, too!

Blown pre-war MG. Taken w/ RX100. Played around with desaturation and split toning.

Cool MG engine, there!

When things go wrong. What happens when valves do a tap dance on a piston. Broken camshaft belt on a desmo Ducati

OUCH!

Some GREAT shots here, Douglas!

Thanks for sharing!
