Canon EOS-M3 Shutter Release Problem
1

I purchased a Canon EOS-M3 in 'mint' condition from Japan. Not having a Canon  EOS-M lens, I mounted a Fotodiox Leica R to EOS-M adapter with a Leica R f/2.8 60 mm macro lens.

I know that neither the AF nor the metering will function, but that is the best lens/camera combination I can do until the EOS M lens arrives.

NOW MY PROBLEM.

I push the shutter release and nothing happens. No picture. This is the second EOS-M3 that I purchased. The first one had the same shutter problem, so I returned it assuming it was defective.

Now the second "Mint" EOS-M3 that I now purchased has the same issue, so I figured that I may be doing something wrong. Two cameras in a row with the same issue is too much of a coincidence.

Can anyone help me to get this camera to release its shutter. I am an experienced amateur photographer of 60 plus years, but this little Canon M3 problem has me stumped.

You need to go into the custom functions area of the settings and "enable" "release shutter w/o lens attached".  By default, the camera is set to prohibit shutter release if it does not detect a lens.  You will need to be in P, Tv, Av, or M mode for this area of the menu to be visible.

nnowak,

Thank you ever so much. The camera now works with 3rd party lenses. In all probability, the first EOS-M3 that I returned was probably OK, and it was less money. You were a big help.

You are very welcome.  I don't know why Canon, and other manufacturers, chose this as the default behavior, but it is one of the most common questions in these forums.  Another poster just had the same issue 4 days ago with their new M6 II.

Have fun with your new M3.

Just out of curiosity, because you said that you returned already an m3, is it something in particular that you search on this camera model?

I couldn't get the shutter to work and thought the camera was defective. So I returned it and ordered another one from Ebay. When that one arrived I had the same  problem. so I turned to this forum to ask what the problem was. It was a simple matter of going to the correct menu subject and clicking on the right item. The shutterr now works just fine and if I had known about this when I had the first camera, it probably would have worked as well.

The problem was my lack of familiarity with Canon cameras and the inherent problem with Canon camera manuals, or most  Japanese manuals for that matter.;-)

Maybe I haven't wrote my question correctly.

I was asking why you chose to buy the eos-m3 model and not another eos-M model. Older or newer.

It was available, it was cheap, the seller called it "mint" and it looked like it would serve my purpose. My old Epson flat bed scanner (so called top of the line) finally died after many years and I am experimenting with scanning negs and transparencies using a copy stand, PixlLatr and macro camera with a fold out LCD screen for focusing. I thought a small competent camera with my Leica R mount lens to camera lens adapter might do the trick.

Early testing with the Canon EOS-M3 mated to my Leica R 60mm f/2.8 macro lens might do the job. So far it showed that the scan is superior to either my old Epson flat bed or my Plustek 35mm scanner with much less fiddling and very little post processing with either Photoshop or Lightroom.

A new flat bed scanner that I used for larger format negs and transparencies or if I bought 35mm/ 120 format dual scanner would have cost about $1200 or more. My total investment so far is about $500 or less with very nice results.

BTW, the Canon EOS-M3 is so nice, I might buy a lens for it and put it in my pocket.

The 22mm f/2 prime lens is as pocketable as it gets on the EF-M mount. Good corner to corner sharpness for a lot less than Leica lenses cost! (Around £100 secondhand on ebay).

Thank you for waking up this thread! I have been looking at the Nikon bellows with much misgiving, only to read about the Pixl-Latr. I like this smaller, more portable set up much better. Plus, I have all of the bits except the holder.

Does the M3 have dual pixel AF?

For anyone considering buying a M series camera on the secondhand market and their photography interests are not dominated by fast shutter needs, I would say the M3 can’t be beaten.

Why?

Because it runs CHDK

For those interested in how CHDK can turn your M3 from a good to a great camera, you may read about my CHDK experiences on my blog https://photography.grayheron.net
