My "new" G1X mk II
6

I've always been interested in compact cameras. It started with the Fuji F100, F200 EXR series and then Canon started to take over my interest with their s90 and s95, and small sensor G'series. I haven't had a compact since my S95. Maybe it was the smartphone era that made me loose interest. I've been mostly using my high end phone cameras last couple of years, which has served me well as a tool to document my life, kids and family vacations with. My more artistic photo-interest kinda got lost in the small children family life.

But now i got a nice deal on a G1X mk II. I started awhile ago looking for cameras like the Fuji X series and Ricoh GR, but was unsure that a fixed lens would satisfy me. I was also looking into Lumix LX100 and LX100 II and would probably also have been pleased by them.

Yesterday was my first few hours with the G1X. I was kinda happy with the low light performance in the "Smithy" shots, and i was impressed by he sharpness and colors and the close up capabilities on the "Volvo" shot. I didn't do much PP, but shot in RAW and converted to jpeg using DPP. Maybe they came out too sharpened by default, too much noise reduct, but was quite happy with how they look small print size. Bigger sized i would probably have had to use more PP.

So i'm really just posting because i think this camera need more praise! Was a joy to use and i'm sure this will get me started with some photography again.

It has always amazed me that Canon cameras have been maligned through the digital years. I won't buy anything else and for more than one reason. Canon has vision and is a leader in innovation. Your G1X series  is a case in point. A new breed of camera filling a niche for high build quality and great image files. It wasn't meant to be a speed demon or a macro camera. Slow and steady as she goes. I'll bet yours will last until you get tired of it and then it will most likely have some value. Good purchase.

You were using phones but your photography is like pros! You deserve such a camera.

For me, the key point you made in your statement was ‘a joy to use’ It is hard to beat that wonderful feeling of a beautifully tooled instrument in your hands. I have no problem with smart phones, each to his own, but for taking pictures, a quality camera every time. Thanks for your post, enjoy your camera.

I find the viewfinder very comfortable to use. You can really get your eye close to it because it sticks out abit on the back and sits high. On many viewfinders my nosetip ends up poking the display and i end up with a noseprint on the screen still not getting that close  contact i like. I personally wouldent want a smaller viewfinder on my G1X, it's physical size is a plus to me. But thats just my personal experience and how hold my camera.

Thanks, Like you I quite like the substantial size of the VF. I think it makes the mk2 much more interesting for me in the future.

Re: My "new" G1X mk II

Yeah, I've owned the Mark II for years (and currently have the Mark III).

It really is an underrated camera and probably the most enjoyable compact I have ever used. Super flexible and versatile. You just have to take care of exposure, since the camera clips white pretty easily, but I'd imagine with new software these days like Photolab 4, you can underexpose and then bring back up in post with NR pretty easily.

If it wasn't for the terrible video quality of the Mark II, I'd probably still be using it today!
