Re: Canon EOS R3: additional pictures

The R5 is already such a capable camera it would be a tough for Canon to make the A3  significantly better. Even right now many reviewers already compare the R5 to Sony's A1.

This isn't Canon's mirrorless flagship, so that's not guaranteed.

The way I see the R3 is a "baby R1" which no doubt is their intention. The R5 for most is about all one needs to accomplish photography from sports, wildlife, portrait, Landscape and more. The focus system is already competent enough to cope with just about anything in the right hands. Resolution is certainly all most anyone needs as well. So it's all icing on the cake. Some like extra icing so what the heck, just come with a large limit VISA and you're all set.

Name the gear and I've probably owned it and used it.

you have some outstanding bird photos on your flicker site, Gary. were those shots all taken in Texas? i know you guys have an excellent bird migration down in Texas. would love to come down in Texas during bird migration. up here in Midwest, we have a boring few species that migrate during some cold mornings that isn't worth the bother to go out early in the morning and get frozen besides, we only have a very limited species of birds here that are around all year that gets old real fast.

happy zooming.

I agree, lots of great shots there.  I’m particularly jealous of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper!!

The whole camera looks massive

I have shot many Canon DSLRs starting with the 10D. I have big hands and have tried battery grips several times.  I just do not like how big they make the camera feel.  No matter what the orientation I prefer the normal camera dimensions.  I am a big guy with big hands.

I actually really like the size of the R5. Personally I don't want a bigger camera.

That said I think the R3 looks like winner.  Reminds me a lot of my EOS 3.

I see no advantage for me with the A1 over the R5. I see only disadvantages in A1 not to of course mention the cost switching of lenses as well as the camera body.

I am in the process of buying more RF lenses because I love the benefits the additonal contacts bring to the fast focus performance of new electronics and nanoUSM motors.  I just got the RF70-200f2.8 even though I have loved my EF 70-200f2.8 for fast shooting action RF nanoUSM model is just faster.   I plan to keep them both for awhile at least.  I still have my 5DIV for backup.

Thanks, 1Dx4me. Head down to Padre Island between April 15 and 1st of May. Maybe we will see one another..

Greg, that is one of my favorites also. Along with the white shouldered Ibis from Cambodia. A lot of great shots from your flickr site..

All the best.

I think I'll wait until the start of my unnatural life for this one. I think some bionic implants would come in handy for handling that. I'm still enjoying the size of the ungripped R, compared with the gripped 7DII which I used for six years. And the M6II is simply a joy to carry. The older I get (not yet retired, but jealous of those who are), the more I appreciate small in cameras. But I'd love to get all the capabilities of this R3 in a smaller package.

As the length of a thread approaches 150, the probability that someone will make the obvious "it's not the camera, it's the photographer" remark approaches 1.

i cannot stand small cameras, hard to control them and they are not very stable. i still enjoy using my 1D bodies. those who are afraid or complain about heavier bodies due to muscular atrophy, my recommendation is to start lifting those tomato cans at home and get those noodle arms in shape

It’ll be interesting how the resolution works out. Does DPAF mean less pixels on a Sony Fab? One would assume no as they have that new not for consumer 100MP monster sensor...

I don't think it is manufactured in a Sony fab. There's no evidence it is and there's no reason for Canon to use inferior pixel designs from their competitor. There are a dozen manufacturers who can do all or part of BSI processing. It's mature.

If I had to guess I'd say the pixel wafer is manufactured by Canon, the readout wafer is designed by Canon and manufactured by one of many good analog friendly fabs and then the stacking is done by the same partner or yet another party.

I've personally watched the thinning and stacking process of said wafers at multiple (fairly generic) fabs starting 8 years ago.

Me too. I retire in 5 years and this may also be my last camera. I photograph subjects at a distance so having at least 30-45 mega pickles is important for me.

I had my eye on the R5. But since the R3 was  announced I'll wait and see what it offers.

Or just because a huge viewfinder is a big selling point for pro cameras.

May be closer to 0.9x viewfinder magnification of Sony A1?

Wonderful birds indeed! At the risk of taking this thread on a tangent, we were exceptionally fortunate to find a new breeding colony of them in Siberia a few years ago. I don't have the high res photos online anywhere currently but there's a few on Facebook here https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?vanity=nz.chris&set=a.10154257767906760

I exercise at least 5 days a week, and that certainly helps. Still I can feel that I am not as strong as before and age is winning the battle.

i don't know anything about your physical state or your age or your genetic makeup, TOF, but speaking for myself, i am 72 and have been pretty active throughout my short life it doesn't take much (a little weightlifting or gardening) for me to get my arms back into shape, even at this age. however, i do believe in entropy (believe me) and genetic makeup of an individual.

if you exercise 5 days a week (you may have lost a lot of weight), i'd use a little heavier weights and perhaps more repetition, that should take correct the "noodle arms syndrome" issue. i am sure you know all this, already.

I wish it was that easy, and certainly w/o exercise my arms would be chewing gum at this stage  , but age is age. A pro baseball pitcher, to take an example, does not throw as hard at 30 than at 26, and 35 vs. 30, etc. with a sharp decline after 30. You can't blame these guys for not exercising enough.
