1100D Not turning on

Firstly - I know this is my fault, not Canon's...

I have had an 1100d for around 10 years and moved up through the gear until I now have some nice top notch equipment.

So about 4 years ago I thought I would stick the old 1100d in the car glove box as a sort of break-glass-in-case-of-emergency camera. But I never used it again.

It's been sitting there in super hot / super cold conditions, with the battery fitted (I know, I know...) and when I dug it out last week and charged one battery the screen fired up for a couple of minutes then died.  I put in a charged spare battery - go nothing at all.  OK - I presumed the batteries were 10 year old dead, so bought a new one - charged that - and get no power at all when inserting it.

Then I checked the old batteries and found one swollen badly - I'm guessing it was the one fitted in the camera all that time.

1. Maybe that swollen battery has killed the camera - what do you think?

2. Or maybe it is sulking and I need to reset it somehow - is that possible?

3. Or maybe I am just an idiot and should bin it and treat my gear with a bit more respect.

Thanks.

Re: 1100D Not turning on

Check if this model has an internal battery. It could be dead, probably is. Don’t know if that would affect it turning on. When my XT goes flat, the image number is messed up. But models are different. That’s the only guess I have.

Yes it has a small internal battery for date and time, but its buried under the main battery slot and requires a total dismantle to access.

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't think its that. That would only affect the camera's ability to retain settings on main battery changes I believe.

Re: 1100D Not turning on

If you are unable to fix it and you want a second Canon DSLR camera that takes good photos, you might consider the Canon T3i (600D) camera. With low shutter clicks I can find them for about $200 to $300 on Ebay with at least one lens. Or you might look at other used DSLR cameras that could take the place of your Canon 1100D. I didn't know about extreme cold or heat causing problems with cameras, but it's probably a good idea to keep them indoors just in case. It's my understanding that inside of cars, the temperatures can increase to much higher levels than just being outdoors in open areas.
